'Survivor: San Juan del Sur' Cast Spoilers: John Rocker, Spider-Man, 'Amazing Race' Twins
Just because no familiar favorites are returning for Survivor: San Juan del Sur doesn't mean that the latest Blood vs. Water-themed season won't have some interesting pairings among its cast.
We have the first six cast spoilers for the new season, and some of the names may be familiar.
Controversial former Atlanta Braves pitcher John Rocker is among the castaways, competing along with girlfriend Julie McGee, a spray-tan business owner. Rocker became a national pariah in 1999 when he went on a bigoted rant in an interview with Sports Illustrated, detailing why he would never play for New York:
"I’d retire first. It’s the most hectic, nerve-racking city. Imagine having to take the 7 train to the ballpark looking like you’re [riding through] Beirut next to some kid with purple hair next to some queer with AIDS right next to some dude who just got out of jail for the fourth time right next to some 20-year-old mom with four kids. It’s depressing… The biggest thing I don’t like about New York are the foreigners. You can walk an entire block in Times Square and not hear anybody speaking English. Asians and Koreans and Vietnamese and Indians and Russians and Spanish people and everything up there. How the hell did they get in this country?”
Will any of the castaways recognize Rocker? Will his 15-year-old tirade come back to bite him in the ass? If nothing else, his reputation precedes him, as the name "John Rocker" became somewhat synonymous with bigotry in the years following his outburst. Should any of the castaways put two-and-two together, he might not actually be long for the island. Then again, a guy like Rocker would make for a perfect "goat" to take to the end, since I can't imagine he'd get a single vote, even if he proves himself to be a reformed man.
With that said, Rocker will not be the only cast member this season whom fellow castaways might recognize, particularly if they're fans of CBS reality competitions.
Twin sisters Nadiya and Natalie Anderson, veterans of two seasons on The Amazing Race, will compete on Survivor: San Juan del Sur. The pair, who were the first team eliminated from the most recent Amazing Race: All-Stars, admitted that their social game needs serious work.
"Literally, we don’t care what anybody thinks about us in real life," says Nadiya. "With the exception of our parents, like, nobody’s opinion matters to us. So we kind of do our own thing disregarding what anybody else thinks about it. As long as I’m okay with my decision and Natalie’s okay with it and my parents are okay with it, we kind of don’t care. So we have to make the extra effort."
Can the twins put their attitude aside long enough to form valuable alliances? Or are they looking to become the first pair eliminated from both a season of The Amazing Race and a season of Survivor? As the first twins to ever compete on the show, the Andersons will be in an interesting position if both make it to the merge, if only for the shenanigans they might be able to play once they're on the same tribe. I'm strangely excited for the possibilities here.
I'm also excited to see how the last of our first three pairs will perform: Broadway couple Reed Kelly and Josh Canfield will compete on Survivor: San Juan del Sur. Following his role in the ensemble to Wicked, Kelly rose to prominence in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, where he played "Debut Spider-Man" and the villainous Swiss Miss. Kelly, who's enthusiastic about getting to play, compares Canfield to former Survivor castaway/Facts of Life star Lisa Welchel.
"She was so great with the way she played," says Kelly. "And the way she carried herself in the game was from such an honest place and a place of faith, which is very Josh, so I think that would be a great person to compare him to."
