Suits - Season 2 Episode 4 - Recap - Discovery

Well, shit just got real, didn’t it? Honestly, there is no better way to describe tonight than that is there? If the first few episodes of this season of Suits were about tying up loose ends from last season and setting up the board for this one, tonight was about putting all of those pieces in motion. So now the question becomes, who can be trusted? Can Daniel really have all of this damaging information on Jessica and Harvey and not use it to his advantage? Did Donna really conceal evidence in an effort to help Harvey? Can Louis trust anybody to have his back? Can we even trust Harvey anymore? I am not really sure on the answers to any of those questions, which really made tonight such a fantastic episode.

On the Daniel front, it is now quite clear that he is not looking for a quick retaliatory blow against Jessica and Harvey. If he was, he had the perfect ammo presented to him tonight, but he chose not to do anything with it. Instead, he is continuing to offer his help to them, even after getting spurned repeatedly. Of course that just begs the question, is he biding his time? In my opinion, he is. If Jessica and Harvey have proven one thing, it is that when they do get beat or one-upped, they come right back swinging with a knockout blow. You really only get one chance to them out, and if you do not, you have all but sealed your fate. Knowing them so well, of course Daniel understands that. So here he is, playing nice and rising above their expectations, just waiting for his chance to end it all.

I have to say, David Costabile has been doing a stupendous job so far. In a room full of actors with a ton of presence, he is easily holding his own. I especially love the quiet menace-like quality he turns on every once in a while, a blink and you will miss it look. It just makes you so uncomfortable, but in a way that fits well with the plot and character.

Also being thrown right into the plot mix is Donna and her actions. So do we think she did it? God knows. On the one hand, we have already seen that Donna will go to great lengths to protect Harvey. The whole situation last year with the DA proved that. On the other hand, this mistake would destroy her, both personally and professionally. Not only would she lose her job and be blacklisted from any others, she would be in for some serious jail time. On top of all of that, it is not like she was protecting Harvey in some huge way by concealing that document. Sure, he would have lost a big case, but not due to any fault of his own. The car company made a poor product and attempted to cover it up, plain and simple. At the end of the day, Donna would have risked everything, and I mean everything, for very little. I just do not see that coming from her, at least in this situation. We will just have to see where this go, and I am sure it will not be so black-and-white.

And will Louis ever get a break? Kudos need to be given to the writers, because they have done an extremely nice and tight job of fleshing Louis out. What first started off as a one-note asshole, as really turned into a multi-dimensional man that I think a lot of people can recognize with on some level. Like I have been commenting on all season, and the writers have been nailing repeatedly, Louis continually gets the shaft. My heart really did break watching him live out his dream of basically being Harvey with Mike in tow as well, just to have it all crumble by the end of the hour. Sure, I agree with Mike that Louis definitely has a great deal of responsibility for his relationships with the others, but man he cannot catch a break. In fact, I totally support what Louis did tonight by giving Daniel the information he did. Nobody else is else on Louis’ side, so he needs to take every advantage he can to secure his position and improve. Hopefully, this teaches Harvey and co a lesson, but I doubt it.

Speaking of Harvey, is anybody noticing the cracks are starting to show there? Harvey is definitely not as smooth this season and in control. Could you imagine Season 1 Harvey throwing the CEO up against a car to get his way? It is clear that Harvey is starting to feel the pressure, and it is definitely taking its toll. I doubt Harvey concealed the document, given his honor code and all, but I am not utterly convinced he would not. Hell, the entire premise of this show is the huge lie he told to get Mike his job, so we know he has it in him to take something to that extreme. Either way, Harvey’s definitely in scrambling mode, and I expect a few balls to start dropping.

Quick hits:

Even though the last ten minutes of tonight were like drama bombs all over story, the first fifty were easily some of the funniest moments this show has ever had. God, I was living for the one-liners:

“You’re a little lippy for a Monday.”

“What don’t you check out the corner of 86 and kiss my ass.”

“No sex of any kind. Weakens the legs and clouds your judgment.”

“I need to go to the bathroom. You just went. Are you keeping track? I may start.”

“My spider-parts are tingling.”

So. Much. Gold. All of those quotes will be worked into my everyday conversation somehow. And of course Donna!!!!!!!!!! The fake sex situation with Mike was just about everything I could want from her, including the thank you’s to each other. On top of all of that, Rachel’s scenes with Harold were the best throwaway scenes the show has ever had. And when she threw the stapler he brought her with all of the other ones she has clearly collected from similar scenarios? I died. I just could not with freaking awesomeness of that situation.

Mike’s been having a little backburner of a season so far. He is involved in the action, it just seems like he is more of a witness to it than a participant. His fledgling bromance tonight with Louis was great, and you could see that they could do well together. Sadly, they will never fully trust each other, and for obvious reasons. Mike is Harvey’s and Louis is an ass to his core, there is just no getting around it. Still, what we did get to see was lovely.

So Tanner is back, and staying for a little bit it seems. So, yeah. Cool. Can I give a bigger meh?

No Trevor and Jenny. Yay.

No Grandma Ross. Boo.

Tonight was a fantastic episode-definitely the best episode of a tight season so far. We will have to see if the show can stick the landing, but for my money, I have no doubts it will.
