Steven S. DeKnight Named New 'Daredevil' Showrunner for Netflix
Marvel's Daredevil is headed to Netflix, but with a new showrunner than the one it started out with, as Steven DeKnight has been named as the replacement for Drew Goddard (writer/director of the hit horror film The Cabin in the Woods).
Goddard left the Daredevil series as showrunner this past weekend due to conflicts with his work writing and overseeing the upcoming Spider-Man villain spinoff movie, The Sinister Six. Goddard, who wrote the first two episodes of the series and was scheduled to direct as well, will remain on the project as an executive producer. However, while Goddard fans might be disappointed, Daredevil is in good hands with DeKnight, whose previous credits include writing for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and serving as showrunner on Spartacus. He's also had a hand in Angel and Smallville, for what it's worth (and for fans of those shows, I'd imagine it's worth quite a bit. Seriously underrated programs, those). For a show centered on a blind lawyer-turned-vigilante, it certainly helps to have dabbled in the fine art of serialized, genre-based storytelling.
"Deeply honored to be a part of it," DeKnight posted on his Twitter, confirming the news. Production on the 13-episode Daredevil series is set to begin this summer in New York for air in 2015. Daredevil will be one of four original, live-action series negotiated between Marvel and Netflix, with the other three -- Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage -- converging in a miniseries titled The Defenders. In essence, Marvel will now have a televised universe to rival its cinematic universe. And it's slowly shaping up to be nearly as formidable.
