Well, never let it be said that death could hold a candle to Col. Quaritch.
Stephen Lang, who played the treacherous Colonel in James Cameron's Avatar, has singed on to appear in all three upcoming sequels to the hit 2009 film. This, despite [SPOILER! But seriously, it's been four years, guys] the character's death at the end of the first movie.
“Steven was so memorable in the first film, we’re privileged to have him back,” Cameron said. “I’m not going to say exactly how we’re bringing him back, but it’s a science fiction story, after all. His character will evolve into really unexpected places across the arc of our new three-film saga. I really look forward to working with such a gifted actor, who’s also become a good friend.”
Cameron is still working on the plot for the sequels, though his plan is reportedly to shoot the three movies one after the other, a la Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. War Of The Worlds writer Josh Friedman will script one of the films, while Rise Of Planet Of The Apes’ Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver will write another. Salinger writer-director Shane Salerno will script the third.
This casting is great news, as Lang is a terrific actor with a commanding screen presence. That said, I'm still trying to wrap my head around what Cameron could possibly have in store for one sequel, much less three. But then, James Cameron has a pretty terrific imagination, so color me excited!
