Stephen Colbert Interviews Smaug the Dragon on 'The Colbert Report' (VIDEO)

Stephen Colbert is obviously a huge Tolkien fan, between his cameo in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and his glorious Middle Earth-themed photo shoot for Entertainment Weekly.

But what happens when Colbert comes face-to-face with one of the most fearsome creatures in all of Middle Earth? Smaug the Dragon stopped by The Colbert Report to promote The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, and the resulting interview is just plain terrific.

In the interview, Smaug muses on everything from Rand Paul, to Orlando Bloom and that "hack" Benedict Cumberbatch, while also chatting about co-star Martin Freeman, the ladies of The View, and the hassle with motion-capture. He even gets to throw shade at the dragons of Game of Thrones and How To Train Your Dragon.

This is tons of fun, and it sounds like Cumberbatch is luxuriating in getting to voice Smaug in a comical setting. The CG is also really impressive, with Smaug himself and his destruction of The Colbert Report set. I laughed pretty hard at his constant deviations from the interview, such as when he flirts with eating the audience, or when he and Stephen getting into a row over how "Smaug" is pronounced. Basically, there was nothing about this I didn't love. For the Last Great Fire Drake of the Third Age, Smaug is actually a pretty compelling interview.
