Star Wars Episode VII Gets Official Release Date

Star Wars Episode VII is making franchise history, in more ways than one. In addition to being the first film in the franchise to be directed by a Star Trek helmer, Episode VII will also be the first film in the official franchise to release in a different time of year than the usual summer premiere.

Disney and Lucasfilm have officially given Star Wars Episode VII a release date of Dec. 18, 2015. In a statement, Disney chairman Alan Horn said that the date would “not only anchor the popular holiday filmgoing season but also ensure our extraordinary filmmaking team has the time needed to deliver a sensational picture.” This release date is perhaps the result of the departure of Oscar-winning screenwriter Michael Arndt, who left the project over creative differences, necessitating a restructuring of the film's plot. The team had reportedly asked for a delay to 2016, and one would imagine this is Disney CEO Robert Iger's compromise.

So now we can all start getting excited about a Christmas that will have more intergalactic goodness in it.
