Spring Awakening - The Wonder of Purple Summer

I watched "Spring Awakening" with Tos last night.
First of all, I had no idea this musical was about sex. LOL -- just goes to show how out of touch I really am. But I think lack of prior knowledge of story or music helped me enjoy the show a bit better. I've realized I'm a bit of a musical snob, and quite hard to please these days, so just being pleasantly surprised at the show was the thing for me.
I thought the music of Duncan Sheik was fantastic. He is working on a new musical tentatively called "Whisper House" for 2009. Hopefully we will be blessed with another winner.
The lead cast we watched was not the original Broadway cast, and according to the Playbill most of them were experiencing their Broadway debut with this show. Good for them. To their credit, they were so much better than the cast of "Rent" I saw last week. The big star of the show was Hunter Parrish from Showtime's "Weeds". Unfortunately he is not a great singer -- which kinda ruined some numbers -- but I thought he was a great actor. He pulled off the dramatic ending wonderfully, which Tos said was better than the "original" cast he had seen twice.
Also, Hunter Parrish, showed his butt not once but twice -- which apparently I shouldn't be mentioning in my blog because 9 and 14 year-old girls are reading this. Which of course makes this paragraph brilliant because "Spring Awakening" is about those 9 and 14 year-old girls who are not allowed to read blogs that mention that Hunter Parrish showed his butt not once but twice in "Spring Awakening".
I'm buying the soundtrack. The original and the Apple Store EP recording of the current cast:
