Space Shuttle - What If?

Crack Is Found in Shuttle's Foam Insulation (New York Times)

As we found out last week, the chief inspection officer of NASA recommended that the Shuttle Discovery was not safe to fly because of safety issues with the foam insulation (which already doomed 2 Shuttles in the past). Fueled by some sort of urgency though, NASA management insisted that the risks were OK and they scheduled a launch last Saturday. However, "weather" issues did not permit a take off. It was postponed for last Sunday and again the "weather" wasn't good. So this morning we get the news that NASA has discovered a 5 INCH crack in the foam during an inspection. Which begs the question: What if the "weather" was good on Saturday or Sunday? Is NASA now relying on PURE LUCK for their space missions? It seems that is the case. It's a tragic-comedy that they are blaming the "weather" when there is obviously something wrong with the Shuttle.
