Sony Planning Female-Focused 'Spider-Man' Spinoff Film

Despite rumors that they would be scaling back the cinematic universe focused on The Amazing Spider-Man franchise, Sony is apparently going all in on the series.

In addition to the Sinister Six film in 2016 and The Amazing Spider-Man 3 in 2018, Sony has announced that the gap between the two films will be filled by a female superhero movie in 2017. The currently-untitled movie will be led by a superhero from The Amazing Spider-Man universe the films have set up.

So now the question remains, which female superhero will serve as the basis for the film? As evidenced by Sony's willingness to make a movie that features the Sinister Six as its protagonists, this new spinoff might not even necessarily focus on a superhero at all. Could the story center on Silver Sable, Firestar, or Spider-Woman? Could it even be Black Cat (a.k.a. Felicia Hardy, a woman introduced into this world in The Amazing Spider-Man 2)? Details are understandably scare at this point, but what we do know is that Lisa Joy (Westworld, Reminiscence) will write the script and that frequent Spider-Man producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are back on-board. Even though Spider-Man is a Marvel property, Sony actually owns the film rights, so it'll be interesting to see if they'll be able to beat Marvel at its own game when it comes to building a fully-involved cinematic universe. The numbers so far aren't exactly in their favor, but maybe they could at least beat out DC's attempt at universe-building with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice? Either way, it's a pretty great time to be a fan of comic books, and an even better time to be a kid, since I know I didn't get to see all my favorite heroes teaming up on the big screen when I was a kid. (*Grumble, grumble*)
