Sony Hacks: Studio Head Wants Idris Elba as Next James Bond

While it's uncertain just how much longer Daniel Craig has in the role of James Bond before leaving the franchise behind, it's evident that Sony is already looking into the franchise beyond Craig. In the latest leaked emails from the Sony hacks perpetrated by North Korea, the James Bond franchise is the topic of conversation.

In an email sent on January 4, 2014, sent to Elizabeth Cantillon, former Executive VP of Production for Columbia Pictures, which distributes the Bond films, Pascal declares:

“Idris should be the next Bond.”

Idris, of course, is Idris Elba, an actor who has long been offered as a suggestion online in fantasy casting, not only for his imposing physical presence, but his dashing, debonair aura. If Pascal gets her wish, this would make Elba the first black actor to take on the role of James Bond, and would likely be enough to salve whatever concerns fans of Craig, the most popular Bond of the modern era, might feel over his inevitable departure.

Any decisions on the franchise will likely have to wait until the release of the latest James Bond film, Spectre, which hits theaters on November 6, 2015.

Personally, I think Elba would be a wonderful James Bond. He's an outstanding actor, capable of matching Craig's brooding, methodical take on the character. I also think he'd bring more of a powerful, imposing presence to the role with his intensity, as evidenced by his work on shows such as Luther and The Wire. The man can do just about anything, so why not Bond? I'd love to see him in the part.

But what do you think? Should Idris Elba get the chance to play James Bond? If not, whom would you like to see as the next 007? Sound off in the comments!
