Brace yourself. Jesus is coming. Well, the actor who played him, anyway.

Diogo Morgado, who played Jesus in Mark Burnett and Roma Downey's surprise hits Son of God and The Bible, has signed on to co-star in The CW's new apocalyptic drama pilot, The Messengers.

The series tells the story of a group of strangers who are connected by a mysterious object that crashes down to Earth. An energy pulse emitted by the object causes their deaths...except, much like with Jesus, death wasn't exactly permanent. The group awakens to discover they have been made responsible for preventing the forthcoming apocalypse. And hey, that's a tall order for a cast that will, presumably, given that this is The CW, be insanely good-looking.

Morgado will play a character known only as The Man, "a mysterious figure who wakes up naked and burned in the desert and sets out on a mission to provide some answers about the strange events."

The cast for the project also includes Sofia Black-D'Elia (Skins), Joel Courtney (Super 8) and Jon Fletcher (The Good Wife). Teen Wolf scribe Eoghan O'Donnell will write the script, while The Town's Basil Iwanyk will executive produce for CBS Television Studios and Thunder Road. O'Donnell will serve as a co-executive producer alongside Kent Kubena and Ava Jamshidi. The pilot is currently filming in Albuquerque, N.M. with Stephen Williams at the helm.

The Messengers is fighting for a spot on The CW's 2014-2015 broadcast schedule, and if the quality of the show matches the interest of the premise, I think it might get a shot.
