Sofia Coppola to Direct 'The Little Mermaid'

Oscar winner Sofia Coppola (Lost In Translation) is reportedly in negotiations to direct Working Title and Universal's upcoming take on The Little Mermaid.

Not a whole lot is known about what kind of interpretation this adaptation intends to present, but one would imagine that Coppola's involvement suggests something highly stylized but narratively minimalist. But who knows? Maybe this will be Coppola's foray into a more mainstream style of filmmaking. Either way, just don't expect singing crabs and talking seagulls.

Caroline Thompson (Edward Scissorhands) will rewrite the script from previous drafts by Kelly Marcel (Saving Mr. Banks) and Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady), which is great not just because they're all talented, but because women screenwriters don't get nearly enough credit in Hollywood.

No word yet on what date the movie is aiming for release, but it should be interesting to see this thing come together. Let the casting speculation begin!
