So You Think You Can Dance Tour - Radio City Music Hall

If you follow me on Twitter (@rickey), you know that I was raving about the So You Think You Can Dance Tour last night at Radio City Music Hall.

It was really great. We even got treated by an Alex Wong appearance on stage after they played his routine with Twitch from the show.

The SYTYCD franchise is alive and well as it looked like Radio City was sold out. The cheers were enthusiastic before and after performances. But it was clear that Kent Boyd was the breakout star of the season. He got the loudest applause all the time.

It was great to see some original made-for-tour choreography which were mostly group numbers. I liked the Bollywood group dance which ended the first half as well as the disco group dance in the second half. The best original however was the hip hop group dance of Russell, Dominic and Jose. I should have taken a video, it was amazing. Dominic is a hoot!

The rest of the show consisted of "best of" numbers from the show, with some dancers substituting for those who weren't on the tour (such as Lauren taking over Comfort Fedoke in "Fallin" with AdeChike, and Ade Obayomi for Neil Haskell in the baseball dance). The top finishers were also given solos. Kent Boyd's solo was excellent, but I thought Russell Ferguson, winner of Season 6, showed everyone why he needed to be on a tour (again, I should have taken a video!)

The show ended with what turned out to be the theme of So You Think You Can Dance Season 7: the "first kiss" of Kent Boyd and Lauren Froderman. It was very sweet. I lost count of the dances, but it looked like Kent and Lauren had the most dances. And rightfully so since they are the stars.

Finally, Allison Holker, Ade Obayomi, Dominic D-Trix Sandoval and Courtney Galliano were great "all-stars" playing supporting cast to the Season 7 and Season 6 dancers. They held things together. While watching, I couldn't help but imagine that they could be the core group for a permanent show on Broadway. A "SYTYCD dance show" like "Burn The Floor" has a lot of potential I think.

If the SYTYCD Tour is headed to your city, I highly recommend you go see it. Kent's energy is infectious even if you are in the nosebleeds.

I had a great time. I'm really glad I went.
