Sleepy Hollow - Episode 9 - Recap - Sanctuary

This week on the best new autumn TV show (FOX's Sleepy Hollow, duh): Haunted house! A new character, a rich lady named Lina Gilbert, buys a house that is really creepy. It's covered in vines and ravens and has a tree growing up ins. Clearly this biz is mad haunted. That made even more clear when a closet full of thorny roots steals the new owner.

Meanwhile, Ichabod doesn't understand our modern ways! He's confused by Big Macs and fries and modern Thanksgiving tradition. They didn't have such things in the past. Then, Captain Irving gives Abbie and Ichabod a case. Guess who is missing?? It's... it's the lady who bought the house. Your guess wasn't even close. You're... you're a terrible guesser. Anyway, they trace this billionaire heiress's lineage and discover a connection to a Founding Father, one Ichabod knew of course. They get to the house, which Ichabod recognizes from a visit he made with Katrina. All of the people there, servants and visitors alike, were free people. Anyway, when they get in the house, the billionaire's bodyguard guy has been crazy murdered, right to death. Ms. Gilbert appears to still be missing. Abbie starts seeing crazy ghosts and stuff, which is no good. She's not happy with being in a haunted house. Ichabod then finds one of Katrina's books, which might also be a ghost. They follow the clues towards the cloest and find Ms. Gilbert locked in it, trapped in the vines. Ichabod tries to cut her free, but the vines bleed and a big tree monster awakens outside. Nobody notices that second part. I'm sure it'll come to them.

Anyway, they get the heiress free finally. She explains about how she bought the house after doing some research. Looks like Katrina was the last person to seek sanctuary at the house. The backstory dump is abandoned in favor of running away when the tree monster finally makes its way into the house. Abbie gets separated from the others during the fleeing. She sees a ghost, who leads her to a vision of a birthing room from the long past. The mother... is Katrina!! Woooaaah! Abbie and Ichabod find one another again, and Ichabod is bewildered by this truth. He's distraught to learn he had a son that is probably two hundred years dead at this point. The tree monster they saw rose and broke the protections on the house to come after the baby. Now it threatens to break Ms. Gilbert if Abbie and Ichabod don't find a way to stop this spooky tree beast. Luckily, he's hurt by bullets, so they free their new pal and follow a ghost to a secret exit. Ichabod grabs some flares and an axe, then heads back inside for revenge. Badass. He destroys the beast... well, far more easily than I expected, emerging from the house covered in its blood.

Unrelated to the big main adventure, there's this other plot! Jenny invites the captain over for Thanksgiving dinner, but she's interrupted by Irving's daughter and ex-wife. Macy, the daughter, goes wandering, and she connects with Jenny instantly. Ex-wife and Irving have a fight about him not visiting his daughter often enough, and then the bombshell: She's going to file for full custody if Frank misses one more weekend visit. Youch.

The big "twist" this week is that Abbie descended from the freed woman who delivered Ichabod and Katrina's son. Not really a shock, though. I was thinking it as a wrote it, but I thought maybe this show of all shows could have two black characters without them being related... because it already does... Which probably means this thing is fine? It's probably fine. Anyway, we're back in two weeks, but check out this preview in the meantime!
