Sleepy Hollow - Episode 8 - Recap - Necromancer
FOX's Sleepy Hollow is back from a killer cliffhanger last week! After their cliffhanger victory, Abbie teaches Ichabod to fist bump. Then on a more serious note, the team debates what to do with their headless captive. They've got him in a cell designed by Thomas Jefferson and fortified with hexes by Jefferson's wife, but the Horseman isn't dying. The trio needs to assemble their team, and get to solving this issue. The local Scooby gang might've captured the Headless Horseman, but the demonic horse is left wandering loose. He's found by some hunters, one of whom turns out to be from the same evil Hessian clan as the Horseman, and he shoots his non-cultist companion to death right after calling it in to some German off-screen guy.
Abbie and Ichabod have to bring in the dead Andy, thrall to the Horseman, as a way to communicate with this Big Bad. Andy insists it is a bad idea, as he will probably betray them because Moloch owns his soul. He's probably right. Anyway, they start the interrogation. At first, Death is unresponsive. Then, as Ichabod gets a bit cocky and close, a necklace falls from the Horseman's collar. He speaks through Andy, finally, to say that it is Katrina's necklace. Ichabod is real mad/curious about why this demon dude would have his wife's necklace, so we get a flashback about it. Katrina was engaged to Ichabod's closest friend Abraham (the necklace was a gift that Ichabod helped pick out), but she left him because she loved Ichabod more. Abbie reminds Ichabod not to let the Horseman get to him, and the interrogation continues. Death reveals that Ichabod was his mission. He was sent to avenge Ichabod's buddy Abraham, Katrina's former fiance. Ichabod killed him! Just as Ichabod spits his denial, the power goes out! Oh no!
The Captain is tasked with getting Abbie's untrusting sister Jenny involved. She cautiously heads with him to a jewelery store where a break-in took place. Jenny is acquainted with the man, and they find him injured. The robbers didn't take any money, just a magic thing they could use to break the hex around the Horseman's cell. The two follow a lead on the bad guys, which leads them to a badass action scene in a power plant. They take down the villains just in time for the SWAT team to arrive as backup... and for the bad guys to blow up a bomb and shut down the power! Oh no!
In the next flashback, we find out what happened way back when with Abraham and Katrina. Abraham is distraught the day after Katrina leaves him, and when Ichabod comes clean about Katrina's declaration of love, it's too much. Abe draws his sword and demands a duel. Ichabod refuses as long as he is able, but then is forced to defend himself. Some Hessians attack and shoot Abraham, forcing Ichabod to leave him behind. Ichabod finished his tale just in time for the arrival of Jenny and Captain Irving. The crew has to go find this hex-breaker before the Hessian cultists get a chance to use it. Just as everyone leaves, Andy pulls a gold amulet from inside his dead gut. Wuh oh. He starts an incantation and then suddenly everything is covered in monsters, oh nooooo. Yes that is the Thracian whatever that will break the hex. Nice job, heroes. You totally effed up this time folks. The Horseman breaks free and challenges Ichabod to a sword duel... a duel which suspiciously mirrors his duel with Abraham. Ichabod puts the twos together to get four, figuring out that the Horseman's true identity is his friend Abraham. The Hessians and Moloch brought back good ol' Dishonest Abe to seek him revenge in service of Moloch, and to seek his "prize": Katrina Crane!
This was probably the best episode so far. The plot was really engaging and the actors were on their A-game. I loved how the scenes in the Horseman's underground cell were shot -- see the header image -- and the editing was also superb. I'm super excited to find out how they're going to rescue Katrina and what it will mean when they do! Check out the preview for this episode below!
