'Sinister Six', 'Amazing Spider-Man 3', and 'Uncharted' Release Dates Announced

Sony has made one of its biggest Comic-Con announcements on the very first day of the convention. Release dates have officially been unveiled for three of the studio's most anticipated films.

Sinister Six, a villain-themed spinoff of The Amazing Spider-Man films, is scheduled to release on Nov. 11, 2016. In many ways, it will be a movie that could decide the fate of the Spidey franchise itself, as rumors have abounded that Sony was unhappy with the box office returns for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and were considering scrapping the planned sequels.

Of course, the rumors were unverified by Sony themselves, and they seem even less likely to be true now that it has been confirmed that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 is still on tap to be released. However, its release date has been pushed back by a full two years.

Yes, instead of its planned 2016 release date, The Amazing Spider-Man 3 has been pushed back to 2018. And even then, there is no specific date in 2018 that the film has been scheduled. Back in the early days of Sony's four-film plan for The Amazing Spider-Man franchise, The Amazing Spider-Man 4 was penciled in for May 4, 2018, but that’s off the table at the moment. As someone who legitimately loved The Amazing Spider-Man 2, I'm hoping the franchise is able to get back on its feet. If nothing else, the bigwigs at Sony are confident that Sinister Six will deliver a return on their investment.

“With ‘Sinister Six’ in the hands of writer-director Drew Goddard, we feel extremely confident placing the film on a prime date in 2016,” said Doug Belgrad, president, Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group.

Meanwhile, Sony also confirmed one of its long-awaited big screen adaptations is on the way: Uncharted will hit theaters on June 10, 2016, the date previously scheduled for The Amazing Spider-Man 3. Based on the iconic PlayStation videogame series, Uncharted tells the story of adventurous treasure hunter Nathan Drake. While the lead role of Drake has yet to be cast, we do know the film will be directed by Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses, Identity Thief) from a script by David Guggenheim (Safe House), with Charles Roven, Avi Arad, Alex Gartner and Ari Arad on tap to produce. A lot of this film's success is going to rely on finding the right Nathan Drake, so these guys have a huge task ahead of them. Here's hoping they can find the right guy, because Uncharted has the potential to be the next Indiana Jones in terms of awesome, pure adventure serials.
