Sin City
According to a Yahoo article on Sin City, director Robert Rodriguez's "economical work ethic
produces movies that resemble big Hollywood productions costing $100
million or more, only at a fraction of the price." Indeed, this weekend, the film has recovered 3/4 of its production budget of $40 million.
I was very entertained by this movie, as I am:
1. male (at least the last time I looked);
2. appreciate comic book style storytelling (I buy comics every Wednesday); and
3. willing to watch anything associated with Quentin Tarantino (who is a mysterious special guest director here)
Anyone outside of this demographic may have to adjust themselves to this movie, but it doesn't mean its bad. It's just different. There are some inspired performances, particularly with the brilliant Benicio del Toro and Clive Owen; and the campy dialog just adds to the fun. Hopefully it will continue its run in the box office next weekend and not get trumped by that Red Sox movie.
I think this is truly the first successful adaptation of a Frank Miller project to the big screen, and its about time someone figured it out (his Robocop stuff just didn't cut it). Unfortunately, the movie concentrates more on style than on character development, but that's not really the attraction of this movie is it? I just felt that I came home with a feeling that the characters were pretty shallow after all was said and done, and there was no connection emotionally as far as character motivation is concerned. It's hack and slash, but it's a very cool hack and slash so I have no complaints.
