Simon Cowell Is Making a Betty Boop Movie
The latest business venture for Simon Cowell is in no way related to televised reality talent competitions. In fact, it's centered on a piece of cartoon-based nostalgia.
Cowell will be producing a film version of Betty Boop, the 1930s cartoon character that is as iconic as she is recognizably weird-looking. Cowell will produce through the film division of his Syco Entertainment company, which will partner with Animal Logic -- the team behind the animation for The LEGO Movie -- to craft "a music-driven hybrid animated comedy".
"Betty is an icon, a diva and one of the biggest stars in the world — I’m thrilled to be working with her," Cowell said, in a statement. "Betty, I hope you’re going to be a good girl!"
This is the latest film venture from Syco's film division, as recent movies include One Chance, the biopic of inaugural Britain's Got Talent winner Paul Potts (which will be made available to stream online before its stateside release), and the One Direction documentary, This Is Us.
According to the press release, Cowell feels “the music has to be current”, which seems like an odd fit for a Betty Boop feature. But then, plenty of popular music these days have retro grooves to them, from Meghan Trainor's "All About That Bass" to the opening verses of Ariana Grande's "Problems". So it should be interesting to see what Cowell comes up with, as Betty Boop is one of those properties that really depends on artists who get the character. That said, let's hope they leave the
at home this time.
