Simon Cowell Hints At Possible 'X Factor UK' Return

Today in London, former X Factor UK judge Simon Cowell made a surprise appearance at a screening of the first two episodes of the show's tenth season. In discussing a possible return to the series he created -- and departed in 2010 -- he told the BBC, “I wouldn’t rule it out.”

Cowell is rumored to make special appearances on the upcoming season, yet there have been no formal talks about a full-time return. However, Cowell has reportedly not ruled out the idea entirely. If he were to come back to the show, he would have to log insane frequent flier miles going back-and-forth between the U.K. and in the U.S., where he is a judge on The X Factor USA. (If FOX opts to renew the show for a fourth season, however, Cowell's schedule will be considerably freer)

The reality show’s contract with ITV expires this year and negotiations are currently underway for a renewal. The Guardian reported earlier this month that ITV has been urging Cowell to return to the singing competition in 2014, believing that the irascible British judge could help lift sagging ratings, particularly after last December’s finale hit a six-year low.

Yet Cowell is still deeply involved with the American version of The X Factor, which is currently headed into its 3rd season. Though Cowell recently likened Season 2 to a bad dinner party, he’s reportedly feeling more confident about this upcoming season, with new judges Paulina Rubio and Kelly Rowland (who was a judge on season 8 of The X Factor UK). Of the revamped UK series, Cowell said, “It’s here to stay, it feels fresh, it’s revived. I feel really good about the future.”

Changes for the 10th season, which premieres this weekend on ITV, include double auditions -- one set in front of the judges “in an intimate audition room” (American Idol style) and the second in an arena. “It’s just so easy after 10 years to get lazy and make the same show again,” Cowell said at the London press launch.
