Showtime TCA 2013: Homeland Season 3 and more

Showtime Entertainment's President, David Nevins, spoke today and TCA 2013. Nevins was all about Homeland, of course. For the most part, though, the conversation with the press wasn't too informative, but that's sort of a positive. Things are running smoothly over at Showtime. Ratings seem fine, so most of your favorite Showtime series are sticking around. The trick planning out the future schedule for 2013 was strategizing lead-ins for new series.

Homeland the hit: Firstly, Nevins spoke universally positively regarding Homeland. Some fans were disappointed with the second half of season 2, but Nevins wasn't one of them. As he put it, the concern was on setting up season 3, as opposed to how the end of the first season wasn't necessarily a strong set-up for season 2. Is there an endgame plan for Homeland? Not at the moment, but Nevins claims that's a good thing. On premium networks, they can make sure that fans are never left hanging with an abrupt cancellation. Homeland isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Is Damian Lewis coming back as a regular? It's all about what the show needs, not was Showtime wants. Stay tuned!

On Dexter: Nevins isn't concerned with competition on fellow premium networks. With shows like Dexter going up against shows like True Blood, people have usually managed to watch both. No sacrifices have to be made. The decision to end Dexter is purely creative. Nevins considers Dexter to be for Showtime what Batman is to Warner Bros.

Pilots: Ridley Scott's The Vatican is starting production in the spring. Also, there's a new series called Penny Dreadful that sounds kind of cool. It's described as a "League of Extraordinary Villains"- type of show.

On everything else: Showtime has over 22 million subscribers! Nurse Jackie is returning pretty much alone, while The Big C: Hereafter is debuting in April with hour long episodes. It will most likely be the show's end. Episodes will also be back, but they're taking their sweet time. Californication will return, and no official end is in sight.
