'Sherlock' Special Could Air Before Season 4
Going through Sherlock withdrawal? Well, you might not have to wait until Season 4 to get your fix. Although Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have been busy with separate projects (with Freeman starring in FX's Fargo, and co-starring with Cumberbatch in the newly-retitled The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies), there might be room in their respective busy schedules for a one-off special prior to Season 4.
While appearing on British talk show Alan Carr: Chatty Man, Freeman dropped hints that a new special could be on the way from an idea by series co-creator/writer/co-star Mark Gatiss:
“Mark Gatiss may beat me up, but there is an idea for this one-off special that’s such a good idea, and as I was listening to it I thought ‘we’ve just got to do this.’ And I don’t know when we are going to be able to do it, unfortunately. It’s a fantastic, really mouth-watering idea. But I really don’t know when we are going to get to do it.”

This has to be a good thing for fans of the show, since we're looking at a two-year wait otherwise. If not longer.
The plan had apparently been to film season four this fall for premiere in 2016, but Freeman admitted last week in an interview with The Guardian that scheduling issues have now made this plan impossible. A special could be exactly the salve fans need to make it through this long, harsh, Sherlock-less period.
