'Sherlock' Seasons 4 and 5 Confirmed by Co-creator Steven Moffat

While this Sunday will be a mixture of excitement and sadness for Sherlock fans, as yet another season comes to a close, there's a lot to look forward to in the future. Although a fourth season of the drama had previously been confirmed, co-creator Steven Moffat has now offered confirmation of a fifth.

Moffat formally announced seasons four and five during a special BAFTA screening of the season three finale, "His Final Vow".

“Rather excitingly, Mark [Gatiss, fellow Sherlock co-creator] and I, for no particular reason, we just got out of the rain and sat at the top of the [Sherlock] production bus… and we just started plotting out what we could do in the future,” Moffat stated. “And we plotted out the whole of series four and five."

Moffat continued, “So we have got plans – but our plans don’t tend to be ‘Let’s blow up the world or cast the most famous person in the world’ they tend to be ‘What exciting twists and turns can we add to this?’ And I think we’ve got some crackers!"

As the screening came to a close, Moffat concluded, “The ideas we had that day, I thought were the best we’ve ever had.”

So, barring any unforeseen circumstances, Sherlock will be sticking around for at least two seasons! Hopefully, the show doesn't go on a crazy long hiatus again, but if that's what it takes, I'm more than open to waiting. Sherlock is definitely worth it.
