Serena Williams Wins Gold Medal - Tennis - Women's Singles - London 2012 Olympics - Medal Results

Two of tennis' biggest stars, current Wimbledon champion Serena Williams & former Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova, battled it out on the Wimbledon centre court for Olympic gold in the Women's Singles event at the London 2012 games.  In a little over one hour, Serena secured the gold for the United States.  Read on for match details and all your medal results.

First off I just have to say "yay! Mary Carillo!"  Since I have done most of my Olympic viewing on the live feeds this year, I haven't had much chance to see Mary Carillo and she's always been the one bright spot in NBC's generally lackluster coverage of the Olympic games for me.

Serena drew the ire of the crowd by delaying the start of the match nearly 20 minutes, asking for repeated bathroom breaks and stopping to drink water.  She had everyone speculating whether it was a case of pre-match nerves or a sudden illness.  However, Serena got off to a fast start winning her first game without losing a single point and serving up two aces.  By contrast, Sharapova did not look sharp at all, getting broken on four straight points on her first service game.

Serena went on to completely dominate the match, winning 6-0, 6-1.  It wasn't the most exciting match to watch and I actually felt a little bad for Sharapova, but it was an impressive display.  It wasn't even that Sharapova wasn't playing good tennis.  No matter what she tried, Serena could not be stopped.

Both Williams sisters have now won gold medals in the singles event and the pair are still in the hunt for gold in the doubles event.

Results:

Gold: Serena Williams - United States

Silver: Maria Sharapova - Russia

Bronze:Victoria Azarenka - Belarus
