Scandal - Season 3 Episode 4 - Recap - Say Hello To My Little Friend
ABC's political thriller Scandal is back with a new installment this week as usual. It's become very popular lately, with the stars even showing up on Jimmy Kimmel's show right after the new episodes this season. It's well-deserved! The concept has legs and the writers are bold, so Scandal provides its audience with some things they can't usually get with other shows.
This week, Pope & Associates get a case representing a sexting Senator! Times are tough and they need the money, or so the team keeps telling themselves. The Senator is being accused of murdering the woman to whom he send the wiener photographs. He's married, but the wife is standing by him. It ends up he's been holding back about some of the sexting, which the prosecution jumps all over. The strategy then becomes to get his wife's testimony to sway them. Olivia has her condemn his cheating and say she hates him while maintaining his innocence in the murder, a brilliant move. It turns out after her testimony, though, that she wasn't actually home to give him the alibi. She lied to save him! Olivia deduces that the wife is the actual murderer and confronts her, but there's nothing to be done. Olivia ends up in yet another situation where the truth is a terrible option! I love seeing these characters pushed to the limit like this. Her stress over this and the whole thing with Operation: Remington lead her to smooching Jake! Her romantic life is still bonkers, hooraaaaay!
Meanwhile, Quinn follows Huck to his AA meeting one night and listens to him spill his guts about his terrible addiction to "whiskey" (which is code for murder). She's worried about him, even though he says he's doing a good job pretending to be normal, haha. Then, he runs into Jake Ballard, who has a proposal: They team up, and kill their former CIA boss (Olivia's dad, Eli Pope). Meanwhile, Fitz arranges a military funeral for Huck's most recent victim, the Oval Office crasher Pete Foster (who has ties to something called Operation: Remington). All the while, Huck avoids Quinn's help. She becomes more and more worried about him. Then, Jake and Huck show up at Olivia's with some new info. Apparently, Pete Foster flew on a secret mission in the Navy with Fitz many years ago. All the secrets end up with Fitz and Eli secretly meeting up for some sort of secret party. Lots of secrets!
The minor plot this week starts off when Mellie goes on the news to give support to a fellow woman in politics, but then is heard off camera saying mean things about her. Cyrus tears her a new one over it, and she preps an apology. The congresswoman accepts graciously, but the damage is done: Mellie has made this woman from the opposing party into a big deal. This is looking to be a season-long plot, and I'm excited for that. I like Mellie and would like to see her involved in something that isn't about Fitz getting down/dirty with other women.
Scandal continues to astound, though after last week's suicide bomber standoff, a Senator accused of murder might as well be an episode of Spongebob Squarepants. The stakes aren't as high, and it seems my worry about the show going too hard too son may be coming true! It's still compelling, to be sure, but only the coming weeks will tell us if there are still some peaks left in the action this season! Check out the preview for this episode below!
