Saturday Box Office: 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' On Path to $281.1M Global Debut
X-Men: Days of Future Past is on track to a record-breaking Memorial Day weekend, as the blockbuster is on path to earn $110 million domestically and $171.1 million for the weekend, bringing its global gross to $281.1 million, the best opening weekend of any film in the X-Men franchise. But that's not all: X-Men: Days of Future Past is now 20th Century Fox's biggest international opening of all-time, toppling Avatar.
However, the news wasn't good for the latest Adam Sandler/Drew Barrymore comedy: Blended is placing at No. 3 behind Godzilla, and may not even reach the $18.1 million projections. If it fails, this would make Blended one of Sandler's worst openings in years. Of course, if there's one positive in this entire mess, it's that Blended has a fairly modest budget. It could very well make back the $45 million production budget before its run comes to an end (and when home video sales are factored in). Still, this is a major hit to Sandler's box office cache, as Blended is a significant drop from his previous comedy outing, Grown Ups 2, which grossed $42.5 million in its debut last July.
Meanwhile, Godzilla saw a 66 percent drop in its second weekend, grossing $31.4 million to come in at No. 2. The film is projected to make $40 million over the four-day holiday weekend. The top 5 is rounded out by Neighbors ($17.3 million) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($7.8 million), two films that remain strong despite the influx of summer movies and tentpole releases. We're early into the summer movie season, but this is looking to be one of the most profitable in some time. Should be even more profitable once we get the final box office numbers in for the Memorial Day Weekend.
