Saturday Box Office: 'The Other Woman' Topples 'Captain America'
After topping the Friday box office with an impressive $9.3 million, The Other Woman is still projected to topple Captain America: The Winter Soldier as the No. 1 movie in America, taking in $25 million for the weekend. The movie features a fairly notable cast, with Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton starring as women scorned by a three-timing cad played by Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Costing $40 million to produce, the film, which also co-stars Taylor Kinney and Nicki Minaj, is driven by female audiences. The relative lack of female-headlining films at the box office, at the moment, is generally regarded as one of the biggest reasons the film is such a hit. At the very least, it's enough of a hit to bump off a superhero tentpole that has reigned at No. 1 for nearly a full month.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier was the runner-up with $4.5 million on Friday, although Saturday and Sunday receipts should bump that number up to between $15 million and $16 million, bringing its domestic total over $222 million. Brick Mansions, the late Paul Walker's penultimate film before Fast & Furious 7, picked up a bit on Saturday, and is now expected to finish at No. 5 behind Heaven Is For Real (now up to the No. 3 spot) and Rio 2 (which sank to No. 4). This was enough to put it ahead of the weekend's other notable debut, The Quiet Ones. The horror film underwhelmed, bringing in just $1.5 million on Friday, a number that has only bumped up to a projected $3.6 million over Saturday and Sunday. Set just outside London, The Quiet Ones stars Mad Men's Jared Harris as a university president who conducts an experiment on a mysterious young girl. Sounds interesting enough, but it just didn't interest audiences in any real fashion.
That said, at least it didn't cost a fortune to make. Thus, its box office failure isn't anywhere near as troubling as the ongoing bomb known as Transcendence. Johnny Depp's poorly-received sci-fi vehicle plummeted more than 60 percent in its second weekend, and is projected to earn just $4 million. This places its domestic total at just $19 million...on a budget of $100 million. Yikes.
We'll be back tomorrow for the final box office for the weekend. Can The Other Woman maintain its lead? Will Heaven Is For Real hold onto the No. 3 spot over Rio 2? Check back tomorrow morning.
