Avatar actor Sam Worthington was arrested in New York City last night (Feb. 23) for punching a photographer.

In his defense, said photographer allegedly kicked his girlfriend in the shin first.

The actor -- who you may remember as one of those fake blue kitty people but probably not as that man on a ledge-- was brought in on assault charges at around 5:30PM in Greenwich Village.

While Worthington was released on a "desk appearance ticket" and is due back in court on Feb. 26, photographer Sheng Li was charged with "reckless endangerment, assault and harassment."

He is being held until his arraignment.
