Ruta Meilutyte Wins Historic Gold - Women's 100m Breaststroke - London 2012 Olympics - Medal Results
Coming into the 2012 Olympics in London, most people had never heard of a 15 year old swimmer from Lithuania named Ruta Meilutyte. We've heard of her now. The teen turned in not one, not two, but three performances of a lifetime on her way to a historic gold medal result in the Women's 100m Breaststroke.
American Rebecca Soni was one of the favorites coming into the final, in spite of Meilutyte's blistering times in the prelims and semi-finals. Soni gave it everything she had and made a race out of it, but Meilutyte was too strong and out touched her at the wall. I'm disappointed for Soni, but it was a thrilling race to watch and it's always fun to witness history.
Meilutyte became both the youngest swimmer to ever win an Olympic gold, and the first swimmer to win a gold medal for Lithuania.
Results:
Gold: Ruta Meilutyte - Lithuania
Silver: Rebecca Soni - United States
Bronze: Satomi Suzuki - Japan
Congratulations to all the medalists!
