Russian athletes Kseniya Ryzhova and Tatyana Firov have taken a stand against their government's anti-gay propaganda laws.
The track stars protested the Russian government by kissing on the gold medal podium after coming in first place as part of the 4x400m relay team at the IAAF track championships in Moscow.
In June, a new law was passed in Russia that made it illegal to spread "propaganda for non-traditional sexual relations" to minors, preventing the public discussion of homosexuality around children. Ryzhova and Firov's kiss is the most visible protest against the law so far among Russian athletes. However, it is not the only display among athletes and celebrities worldwide in recent weeks. Swedish high jumper Emma Green Tregardo painted her nails in a rainbow for the track and field world championships, while TV personality Andy Cohen has boycotted the Miss Universe pageant, refusing to co-host because the competition is being held in Russia.
