Rooney Mara is headed to Neverland.

The former Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is in negotiations to play the role of Tiger Lily in Warner Bros.'s upcoming Pan, from director Joe Wright (Atonement, Pride and Prejudice).

This latest take on the Peter Pan mythos is "the untold story of how a young orphan boy from London is spirited away to the magical Neverland where he finds grand adventures that shape him into the hero known to generations as Peter Pan."

The film is expected to be a huge tentpole release for Warner Bros., who already have some of the major roles lined up, with Hugh Jackman in the running to play Blackbeard, and Garrett Hedlund all but signed on as the young Captain Hook.

But don't let the mostly white cast fool you. Wright is apparently planning to create a world that is "very international and multi-racial, effectively challenging audiences’ preconceived notions of Neverland and reimagining the environment." This would seem to suggest a possible actor of color in the lead role, since I can't imagine which of the other leads would fulfill Wright's mission, unless an "international and multi-racial" world means "background characters of color." And if that's the case, I just wouldn't have brought up the mission at all.

Pan is scheduled to begin filming soon, as the movie will release in 3D on July 17, 2015.
