Rodney To and Sides: The Fear is Real (and oh what a great day it was!)
(First of all, it is just not humanly possible to scan through 300+ comments for two days straight. I'm just letting the Constantine posts stand as is, but please moderate the junk yourselves. There's bound to be some idiot posting just to get noticed, but I know you guys are mature enough not to let anything escalate into a flame war. You guys are great! I know a lot of you think I'm such a flake for liking Anthony Fedorov, but your guys are still great! Mwah! I can't help it if I have the sensibilities of a little girl...)
But really, I just have to talk about my beautiful self right now...
I was really excited yesterday to watch the truly hilarious Sides: The Fear is Real, mainly because I felt that it would take us away to a better place... away from the train wreck that American Idol has become with Constantine leaving, Scott seemingly possessing Carrie-like invincibility and now The Smoking Gun releasing documents of Bo Bice's cocaine and drug use as recent as 2003. (Sorry kids, I was running around New York yesterday, and couldn't break this fast enough, thanks for the e-mails though).
It was of course a full day. I had three clients during the day, and I was quite lazy and late for the first one. I was however surprisingly efficient since I was in a rush. My iPod was on shuffle mode all day and I realized my interests are truly diverse as during one memorable set I listened to Paul Williams then Enya then a song from Les Miserables then the Black Eyed Peas then Swan Lake. I think I skipped it when Mario Cuomo started giving a speech. Anyhow, it was interesting to see what song would come up.
I met a new client, who turned out to be some hotshot Broadway director, then later Niles brought me to Staten Island to repair his girlfriend's Internet connection. This is Niles (he has a band called Volatile-Id):
I was really excited however to watch the play, so at 6 PM, we had a pre-show dinner at a Filipino restaurant called Krystal's, which for all intents and purposes was an authentic Filipino restaurant/karinderia, complete with "cheap" utensils, tacky decor and surprise-surprise a karaoke screen! I have mixed feelings about this place since non-Filipinos would be weirded out, but if you are Filipino, during that hour that you are enjoying what tastes like a home-cooked meal, you are transported to a different place and even time, up until you exit the door and the cold air hits you, and you realize you are "back" in New York City. (Our meal consisted of Sinigang na Bangus - Milkfish in Sour Soup, Pork Barbecue and Lumpia - Vegetable Spring Roll with Peanut Sauce).
The play of course was really funny. We laughed our hearts out, and the small venue reminded us of the Faculty Center theater in the University of the Philippines. We both hope that Sides moves to a bigger theater soon and a wider audience. After the show, we managed to get our pictures taken with the stars of the show, the delicious Rodney To and Cindy Cheung:
Rodney: Sino si Anthony -143?
For the night cap, we walked a few blocks to the West Village and had dessert at Caffe Dell'artista. If you are ever go here, we highly recommend the Banana/Banana (thanks, Jimi!)
And that's it. It's always a great day.
