Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2014 Nominees Include Nirvana, KISS, LL Cool J, more

The nominees have been announced for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2014, and the sixteen acts eligible for induction are as varied as they are prolific. The prestigious Hall has become more of an institution of popular music as opposed to Rock and Roll in particular, which is why the acts range from Nirvana to LL Cool J, from Linda Ronstadt to N.W.A., from Hall and Oates to Cat Stevens. It's one of the more diverse, eclectic nominee lineups in recent history, and that variety is likely to make this a really tough call for voters.

The 16 nominees are:

For the second straight year, the public gets to vote along with the usual assortment of acclaimed artists, historians and music industry insiders who comprise the Rock Hall voting body. Voting will be open from now until December 10th, and fans can vote on RollingStone.com for the nominees they'd like inducted. The acts that receive the highest number of votes will be entered onto a "fan's ballot" that will count as one of the more than 600 ballots that will determine the Class of 2014.

Some of the nominees have appeared on previous ballots, while the majority are first-time nominees: Hall and Oates, The Replacements, Linda Ronstadt, Link Wray, Cat Stevens, Yes, The Zombies, Nirvana, and Peter Gabriel. Of these first-timers, Nirvana is the only act to land on the ballot in its first year of eligibility. Meanwhile, Peter Gabriel is the only artist among this group to have been previously inducted already, as he was inducted in 2009 as a member of the band Genesis.

To be eligible for this year's Hall, artists need to have released their first single or album in 1988 or earlier.

The top vote-getters will be inducted at an official ceremony in New York City.
