Rihanna is not only one of the biggest stars in music today, she is also about to be crowned an "icon".

The singer will receive the first-ever Icon Award at the 2013 American Music Awards. The accolade was created to honor an artist "whose work has influenced pop music on a global level."

In addition to receiving the award, Rihanna will also perform on the telecast.

“Rihanna’s iconic and innovative sound has enabled her to become one of the most influential and best-selling artists of all time,” said producer Larry Klein.

The singer has landed 12 No. 1 singles across 7 albums released in 7 years, winning 6 Grammy Awards and selling over 50 million albums and 180 million digital tracks worldwide in the process.

Rihanna joins a lineup of performers that includes Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, One Direction, TLC, Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Imagine Dragons, Ke$ha and this year’s host, Pitbull.

The 2013 American Music Awards airs live on November 24 on ABC.
