Revolution - Season 2 Episode 10 - Recap - Three Amigos
NBC's Revolution is back from its winter break, following our post-apocalyptic nightmarescape... Oh, and the show's post-apocalyptic world too. After the cliffhanger mass murder ending last episode, some Patriot troops survey the damage. We pick up enough time later that Aaron and the other heroes have gotten away, with badass Miles Matheson (Billy Burke) dying from poison.
Monroe and Charlie arrow some Patriots through the soft parts in order to break out Doctor Grandpa from jail. He kinda quickly glosses over his shock about Monroe being alive, paying a lot more attention to his reunion with Rachel and to Miles's dire medical state. There's a particularly gruesome scene where the good doctor cuts his patient's arm open and fills the wound with maggots and goddamn, not even a little "Viewer Discretion is Advised" before the episode started. Anyway, Miles recovers and is immediately grilled by Monroe on where Monroe's secret lost kid is. The kid is a boy named Connor, and Miles is going to lead Monroe to him in thanks. Seems like... a bad idea. Rachel tags along to add some much-appreciated emotions to the proceedings, very cold to Monroe (who, you might remember, is the reason her son is dead). They've gotta get into a work crew in Mexico to get to him, which doesn't prove much of an obstacle at first. Monroe quickly gets tired of this plan and hilariously hijacks the wagon they rode in on. I really like this moment. They get to a town full of deadend leads, eventually landing in a crime town where a young crime leader confronts them and their questions. And BOOM, it's Monroe's son. He's a total brat, just as cocky and macho as Monroe. Once the trio of main characters make camp for the night, Monroe sneaks back to meet with his son again with foolish promises of restarting the Monroe Republic. Monroe is taken off, leaving this plot on a cliffhanger with Rachel and Miles for some reason deciding that Monroe needs rescuing. Monroe's invincibility in the writers' room is this show's biggest problem. We lose competent and perfectly interesting characters all the time, for terrible reasons, but Monroe has survived everything. He was the main villain in the first season, several times finding himself at the wrong end of a protagonist's gun without ever having a trigger pulled. This season, they captured him, tried him, and EXECUTED HIM FOR HIS CRIMES and he's still around! It's getting completely absurd. Not that I don't like him! Monroe is a fine character, and the actor does a great job, but continually threatening him so strongly with death and then never killing him is just ridiculous. Anyway, I'm sure he'll be saved!
Aaron's still grieving over his partner Cynthia's death, the totally needless killing that really only happened so Aaron could feel his big dumb manfeelings. For a show with a considerable female cast and from the creator of fangirl favorite Supernatural, it's kind of a bummer to see the dull cliché of a female lover being slain at the altar of male character motivation. Whatever, the point is that Aaron is sad for reasons. Once Monroe, Rachel, and Miles head away on their little adventure, Aaron leaves a note, ditching Charlie and Gramps. The search for Aaron is broken off when a Patriots cart drives by. Charlie kill the drivers dead, a bit of a shock to her grandfather, and the pair discovers their cart is full of oranges in crates. The oranges end up in town, being injected by Patriots with an unknown substance in a secret basement. Oh geez! Are they poisoning a whole town? Maybe it's mind-control serum? What could it be?!
Neville and his surprisingly not-dead wife have found themselves right where they want to be: The White House. They're at a fancy dinner party, ready to assassinate the President's Chief of Staff of their way to presidential assassination. The attempted poisoning is interrupted by prying eyes, but the pair of almost assassins start to doubt each other's commitment. While tom's son Jason spies on some secret documents, Tom is murdering the Chief of Staff with his bare dang hands, a total badass. We don't find out the contents of the documents, but Jason's reaction tells us it's probably going to be a doozy.
This season's main jam has been ending on Aaron-related cliffhangers, and this episode is no different. Aaron finds his way to a town the nanobot kid mentioned offhandedly, finding the fellow programmer from last season, Grace. More nanobot magic! This show wants to be a few different shows, which would be worse if either show was bad. On one hand, there's the show about humanity surviving in a post-electricity world. Then, there's the show about the nanobots and how they can bring people to life or destroy society. I think the show would be stronger if it focused on only one of these ideas, but I also like both halves and don't wanna ditch either! Anyway, here's a preview for this episode!
