Push Girls Means to Break Stereotypes of the Disabled
Push Girls is a new reality show focusing on the lives of four wheelchair-bound women paralyzed from the neck or waist down.
The first episode airs tonight on the Sundance Channel and stars model Angela Rockwood, dancer Auti Angel, clothes designer Tiphany Adams and graphic designer Mia Schaikewitz. All four women are talented Los Angeles go-getters who shatter myths about people with disabilities.
"Plenty of people have no idea what it's like to spend the day in the life of someone with a disability, let alone a spinal cord injury," said Adams. "How do we get in and out of a car? How do we go grocery shopping? How do we get in the shower? How do we get dressed? I thought it was a brilliant idea for the world to see that."
The show also explores the quartet's private lives, including boyfriends, love and hitting the clubs at night. Nothing in the women's lives is off-limits.
"When people hear it's a show about women in wheelchairs, I expect them to think it's going to be exploitive," said producer Gay Rosenthal. "That doesn't surprise me, but hopefully the way I am telling the story and the way the girls are sharing their lives, it's going to be 'Wow! How dynamic, how interesting.'"
