Project Runway - Season 10 Episode 2 - Recap - Candy Couture

Last week, on Project Runway, the designers got to show their looks in Times Square.  Christopher came out the winner and we said goodbye to Beatrice.

See our exclusive interview with Beatrice Guapo here!

We open this week's show with the designers discussing the first elimination.  Lantie says she was stunned to be in the bottom three, but she just knew she was going home.  The rest of the designers seem pretty surprised that Beatrice was the first to be eliminated.  Ven thought he had the strongest look and is confused about why Christopher got the win.

Heidi Klum has gathered all the designers together.  Heidi tells us that, thanks to his win last week, Christopher will have immunity in this week's challenge.  Heidi then sends the designers off to Dylan's Candy Bar to learn about this week's challenge.

This week will be the "unconventional materials challenge."  The designers will have access to everything inside of Dylan's Candy Bar (queue product placement) and can make anything they want.  Their budget is $250, but everything in the shop is 50% off, so essentially they can spend $500.  That's a lot of candy!

In addition to candy, Dylan's has some actual garments, like t-shits, in the store as well as other fabric items such as pillows.  Buffi and Kooan think that taking the easy route and using fabric is a bad idea, but some of the other designers, like Christopher and Andrea, seem to disagree based on their purchases.

The Freegan wants to create a modern Jackie O outfit.  Buffi is going for a colorful circle dress.  Elena plans to go with her usual futuristic silhouette.  Alicia is doing a one shoulder coverall.  Andrea is working on a Victorian sort of apron.  Kooan is weaving a sweater dress out of twizzlers.  This kooky candy challenge seems like it would be right up his alley.

The contestants are given until 1 a.m. to work the first day.  Whoever wins this week will also receive immunity for the next week.

Gunnar and Christopher are still being catty in the work room.  Christopher tells us that he just really wants to keep away from Gunnar, but it's like walking on eggshells.

Buffi is using an umbrella to construct her circle skirt, which is annoying everyone else in the work room, because of all her noise making pounding it into shape.

Lanti tells us that four years ago she was about to open her own store, but then the economy tanked.  /rant Not to be insensitive, but I'm kind of getting tired of hearing every person on one of these reality shows that has a failed business blaming it on the bad economy.  /endrant Dmitry thinks Lanti isn't pushing herself far enough in this challenge.

Ven tells us that he knows he's a good designer and that he has a bunch of awards to prove it.  He is here to win! He's in it to win it dawg!

Nathan is concerned that his candy garment is going to be too heavy.  Gunnar thinks that since Christopher has immunity, that he should be pushing the envelope more.

Tim is impressed with what Michelle has done so far.  Elena is concerned that her dress will not be colorful enough, but she has to commit to the color pallet she has selected.  Tim is also impressed with Sonija's work.  Ven also tosses her a compliment.

Ven wants to make his dress interesting, but he also wants it to be wearable.  Tim is crazy about the weaving Buffi has done so far, but Lanti is not impressed with Buffi at all and thinks her tastes are "garrish."

Gunnar is working on a checkered dress, but he is concerned about what the pattern will do to a woman's figure and thinks he needs to break things up with a belt or something.

Dmitry is planning on waiting until the model fitting to start applying his candy beads, but Tim tells him he is insane and he's got to start applying them now.  Kooan is in trouble and has basically had to start over on his dress.  Tim is very concerned with Lanti's time management.

Tim tells Andrea that he is underwhelmed beyond words by what Andrea has done.  Ouch!  He thinks her apron looks like a craft project.  Andrea is too devastated to even speak to the camera about it.  She basically starts all over on her garment, but begins to regret it after she has already cut up her apron.  Elena is struggling to glue her pina colada licorice on to her garment and tells us she is so sick of the smell she could puke.

Everyone is starting to stress about when the models are going to arrive.  When the models do show up, several of the designers don't really have anything ready to be fit, but Dmitry is relieved, because he needs to fit his garment before he can finish applying his candy.  He is confident he will be on the top, because his garment will have movement and no one else's will.

Sonjia thinks everyone is rushing too much through their fitting, because they are so focused on getting back to placing their candy.  Christopher is still obsessing over Gunnar's workroom antics.  Ven thinks the winner is either going to be himsef or Sonjia.  Sonjia doesn't think Ven's design is very interesting.

Andrea thinks she made a mistake by destroying her garment based on Tim's critique and thinks she should trust her gut, so she goes back to her original idea.  Lantie scraps her original idea to use computer covers from the shop and switches to using the material from the umbrellas.  The other designers are anticipating a Lantie meltdown.

Ven thinks Kooan's look is too out there and he can't see anyone wanting to wear it.  Disaster strikes when Elena burns her leg while using the glue gun.  Christopher opines that maybe that wouldn't have happened if she didn't wear "hoochie shorts" to work.  He has a point.

The day of the show has arrived.  Elena is still in pain from her glue gun burn.  Kooan is freaking out because his cotton candy has melted over night.  Buffi is also having cotton candy issues.

Lanti thinks her design is very girly and unique, while being edgy at the same time.  With only one hour to go, Elena is going to have to do some more gluing because her licorice is falling off.  I am really starting to worry about her chances this week.

Ven is not impressed with Andrea's garment at all, but Andrea thinks she has a shot at number one.  Meanwhile, Ven is telling his model not to bend or move too much and not to touch anyone. That garment isn't sounding all that wearable Ven!

It's Runway time!

The guest judge this week is Dylan Loren, founder and CEO of Dylan's Candy Bar.

I think Sonjia's dress looks pretty amazing.  Melissa's is also pretty good and really looks like leather.  Nathan's is kind of kooky, but I like it.  Andrea's is very weird for me.  I like Alicia, but I don't like her jumper at all.  I think it's mostly the color palate.  Elena was another early favorite of mine, but I think her dress looks terrible, plus her candy is falling off.  I really hope she doesn't get sent home, but I'm afraid for her.

I think Dmitry's dress is pretty hot.  Kooan's is very colorful, but it's a stiff awkward shape. I think he may be in trouble.  Christopher's dress is cute, but I agree with Gunnar that he played it a bit too safe.  Gunnar's dress has a neat pattern that came out really well.  Buffi's dress is actually pretty cute, which really surprises me, but it doesn't look like she used very much candy.  Lanti's dress isn't as awful as I thought it would be, but I think she's going to get reamed for barely using any candy in her design.

Ven's dress is very cool looking.  I love it.  Ven's is my favorite of the night, with Sonjia's a close second.

The Results:

Top Three:

1.  Sonjia - used an aquatic theme inspired by her candy sharks

Project Runway - Season 10 Episode 2 - Recap - Candy Couture

Heidi thinks she made a very pretty dress out of candy, but she doesn't like the hat.

Dylan likes every angle of the dress and turquoise is her favorite color.

Michael loves the surprise at the back and thinks it is very well done.

Nina isn't bothered that it looks like a costume and really likes that she picked a theme and used lots of different candy.

2. Ven -  was inspired by a stained glass window.

Ven - Project Runway

Heidi thinks Ven has great tastes and the dress is stunning and very flattering.

Nina calls the dress sublime and right on trend.  She dubs it "candy couture."

Michael loves the asymmetry and says the dress has a sense of humor but is still chic.

Dylan is impressed with the artistic level he took the candy to, but is disappointed he only used two kinds of candy.

3.  Gunnar - created a pattern and several accessories

Chris - Project Runway

Heidi likes that Gunnar created a print.

Dylan is impressed that Gunnar created his own accessories.

Nina says it is cute and fun and he really put a lot of thought into it.

Michael is impressed with how Gunnar transformed his materials.

Bottom Three:

1. Buffi - was inspired by Sex & the City

Buffi - Project Runway

Heidi doesn't like that Buffi used so much paper on the bottom and she is way over accessorized.  She looks like a five year old going to a birthday party.

Michael thinks the dress belongs on Toddlers and Tiaras.  She doesn't look fun.

Nina thinks she took the easy way out and it looks like a "pink explosion of messiness."

Dylan thinks it looks fun, but she doesn't like the bottom.

2.  Lanti - admits she had a melt down

Lanti - Project Runway

Michale doesn't think Lanti transformed the fabric and is basically just a decorator.

Dylan is disappointed that the dress is not made of candy.

Heidi points out that other designers were able to make something from candy in the same time she had.

Nina is tired of Lanti's excuses and while she doesn't think the dress is atrocious, she doesn't think Lanti embraced the challenge.

3.  Elena - was worried about the challenge because she doesn't usually use color

Elena - Project Runway

Heidi thinks Elena's dress looks like a child's project.

Michael calls it "rigatoni mad max."  He says she sucked all the joy out of candy. He also doesn't like the silhouette.

Dylan doesn't like the lack of color.

Nina thinks the look is cohesive, but the look has no color and no fun.  She also hated the silhouette and thinks Elena's insistence that she was just being true to herself is arrogant.

Winner: Ven

Out: Lanti

I am in complete agreement with this week's winner.  I think his dress was amazing.  I actually thought Elena's look was the worst this week, but I'm glad she survived another week.  I think the fact that Lanti made basically the same mistakes two week in a row and all her excuses about not having enough time really did her in.
