Princess Beatrice had the last laugh today when her Philip Treacy hat sold for a record-breaking £81,101 on auction website eBay.

Young royal Beatrice, 22, decided to capitalise on the unexpected frenzy surrounding her hat by putting it up for sale to raise money for the UNICEF and Children in Crisis charities through her Little Bee Initiative, which she set up for the purpose of this auction.

The hat had around 724,000 views and 94 bids, and set a new record for the sale of a designer hat on eBay. At one point Australian children's band The Wiggles were the highest bidders.

Beatrice said of the auction," I've been amazed by the amount of attention the hat has attracted It's a wonderful opportunity to raise as much money as possible for two fantastic charities. I hope the winner of the auction has as much fun with the hat as I have".
