Pretty Little Liars - Recap: Ezra Calls 'The Maury Show'

Tonight’s Pretty Little Liars moved Emily straight into the den of the blonde beast. Would you consider rooming in your dead best friend’s museum of a bedroom if it meant answers? There’s free lasagna involved!

Episode 10 of Season 4 of Pretty Little Liars, “The Mirror Has Three Faces,” finally brought some suspense back to a series that best thrives on gruesome gossip and seductive secrets. The past few weeks’ worth of episodes have been more so about quiet whispers and, well, kind of a lot of whining. It seems as though the cracking of Jenna’s skull during last week’s episode’s close might have christened the last few episodes heading into Season 4’s summer finale. Who is this Red Coat? It’s looking more and more as though Cece Drake is more of a lunatic and not so much a lousy boutique owner. Here is my Recap and Review of Pretty Little Liars Season 4 Episode 10, “The Mirror Has Three Faces”!

With Mona (Janel Parrish) locked away in Radley, our four favorite Liars got back to wondering whether or not they could trust the latest addition to their crew. Mona’s false confession had, of course, freed Ashley Marin from incarceration, but was Mona merely snowballing another harebrain scheme? Meanwhile, Wren (Julian Morris) is totally evil, all of a sudden, folks. Mona confided in her doctor that she’d turned over a new leaf surrounding Hanna (Ashley Benson), Aria (Lucy Hale), Emily (Shay Mitchell), and Spencer (Troian Bellisario), but Wren was more concerned with running through basic psychological tests, like describing boring old emotions while looking at a lame sketch of a family of farmers. Mona, like most of us would have done, chose to critique the shoddy artwork instead. Whom are we to believe? Mona has seemed significantly less shady this season, but was she ever truly “shady”? Mona was more so about “in your face” cunningness during Season 3. She was more so reveling in being A and rubbing it in these Liars’ faces. Wren, on the other hand, seems to have strange connections to some of Rosewood’s most awful. Cece Drake always seemed like the poor man’s Ali. Now, she's seeming like a good old fashioned nut-job.

Meanwhile, Mrs. DiLaurentis (Andrea Parker) extended an invitation to the Fields ladies, and only Emily would end up accepting it. Emily had, of course, been sleeping in a motel since this new A destroyed her family room via car wreck. With Mrs. Fields out of town, the other Liars pressured Emily (So heinous but so necessary. Sorry, Emily!) to take Ali’s mother up on her offer. I mean, is it really so bad to sleep in your dead friend’s bed if it means putting an end to all of this? Spencer would help Emily get settled in, but, in truth, none of the other girls were really willing to budge when it came to spending significant amounts of time around Ali’s things. Hey, A didn’t choose to destroy their family homes. Tough luck, Em! In truth, this proved to be a learning experience for both Emily and us, as viewers. Are we buying the softer side to Mrs. DiLaurentis? Jessica, as we’ve been invited to call her, was handed divorce papers. She and her husband simply didn’t grieve the same way following Alison’s death. Ali’s father basically moved on with a “Who’s Ali?” mentality. Jessica preferred to create a fully functioning Ali museum, complete with sporadic and spontaneous visions of her dead daughter. Don’t worry, Mrs. DiLaurentis. We’ve all seen Alison at this point… Or was it just some freak in an Ali mask? Both? More to come!

As this bond between Emily and Mrs. DiLaurentis began to form, Toby (Keegan Allen) and Spencer decided to continue his quest to tie his mother’s suicide/ murder to this ominous threat of “the blond girl” Dr. Palmer had mentioned during Toby’s first interrogation. Remember, the man is on the brink of insanity, but just so damn nice! Once Toby received the sheet music A left as another clue, along with a note suggesting he skip the lamb and head for the lion, Spoby came to the conclusion that this “lion” must be Dr. Palmer, as opposed to their good buddy E. “Lamb.” See, I didn’t think that clue was correctly analyzed, but the two did find something. If you ask me, they got lucky. Basically, Toby’s mother used to play piano, including the song left by A. The sheet music, at first, did little to ring any bells for Dr. Palmer and mention of this “blonde” came up short as well. Of course, Spencer is a super-genius and probably magic. She decided to give it one last-ditch effort; playing the music in order to draw the doctor into a memory. Spencer played the role of Toby’s mom, and if you’ve been reading my recap and reviews, you know there’s nothing I enjoy more than watching actors acting as actors. What they ended up with, was a name-check; Mrs. DiLaurentis.

Hanna was successful in an attempt to track down Wren on his lunch break, hoping to convince him to let her in to see Mona. Wren, refusing to play into Hanna’s current plan initially, did mention that another blonde had attempted to visit Mona prior. Mona had reminded us earlier of her current distrust for Wren. The original A does not like the current company this doctor keeps. All roads pointed to Cece, needless to say, and once Hanna left with nothing more than the hope that Wren could pull some strings for her, he’d give us more reason to doubt him. Wren made a call alerting another to this new “problem,” promising to take care of his end of things. My initial thought was that Wren was calling Caleb and that we were being misled. Mostly, this was because we’d eventually catch a glimpse of Caleb attempting to visit Veronica Hastings (Lesley Fera), looking to spill the beans on the Liars’ latest bunch of secrets. Hanna would catch him off-guard just prior to his visit.

Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) began unraveling during Episode 10 as a result of the constant sense of hopelessness and helplessness regarding the entire A/ Red Coat situation. Caleb has always been there to actively protect Hanna. Mona was always a challenge, but Caleb would meet her head on. This new A, and this Red Coat, are basically supernatural. Caleb, coming to the end of his rope, would plead with Hanna to come clean to her parents about A and to inform the police of the current dire situation. I’m with Caleb on this one. What more can these villains do to them? Ashley can end up in jail for life, Pam was almost run over by a driverless car, and Ella is on a permanent Euro-trip vacation!

As the rest of our Liars worked on uncovering more clues, Aria booked a hot date with Jake (Ryan Guzman), who was set to compete in some smelly karate tournament championship that he tried to blow off as though it were no big deal. Aria used it as an excuse to pay Jake back for all of his good will, and, what do you know, he won! He cried like a baby over a scratch on his lip, but the two ended up having a pretty seamless date night. No near drownings. No punk brothers. No panicked ex-boyfriends… Oh, wait… Much of Aria’s plot during Episode 10 surrounded Ezra (Ian Harding), although, she would never realize it. Ezra… you are NOT the father! Did Ezra call Maury? That’s right, future A-Team members. You might have seen this one coming, but I’m sure your sadness for Fitz probably came coupled with a newfound sense of admiration following his badass lashing out at his awful ex-girlfriend. Maggie had played him for years, and let’s not forget, she took his family’s money! I’m not sure he even mentioned that. How illegal was all of this, in the end? Ezra and Malcolm even had inside jokes! When push came to shove, a shaking Ezra attempted to call Aria for support, but, you know how it goes, there’s an “ignore” button on phones, *press*.

Aria hadn’t totally come up short. After tracing a cable bill Caleb had drudged up to an apartment in Philadelphia, Aria managed to bump into Cece’s old roomie, and the girl was not happy. She clued Aria in to the fact that Cece simply loathed Hanna, Emily, Spencer, and herself, blaming them, along with Ali, for getting her kicked out of school. Remember, Ali once pushed someone down a flight of stairs at a frat party.

Wren, apparently meddling, yet again, in the affairs of teenage girls, made his way to Hastings Manor, looking to plant seeds in Veronica’s head. Wren broke his confidentiality agreement with Mona, informing Veronica of her apparent devious ways. We still don’t know if Mona even needs to be on medication, but it’s looking more like Wren will put her on some in the near future, right? That would make for a great loopy “I saw Alison!” moment at Radley. Veronica, who loathes Wren for what he did to Melissa, snuck her way into Radley using her connection at the front desk and gave Mona a downright scary warning; mess with Spencer and her friends, rot in jail forever! I don’t doubt that she has the power to do that, generally speaking, but someone anonymous reported Mrs. Hastings for obstruction of justice. Someone else would have to handle Ashley Marin’s case, even if the report was bogus, and Hanna, needless to say, was livid.

Earlier, Hanna had attempted to spring a surprise visit on Emily, only to meander through the DiLaurentis home alone. Well, at least Marin thought she was alone. Red Coat quietly tiptoed around Hanna, giving us a few freaky glances before going back into hiding.

Mrs. DiLaurentis’ frisky furnace was eventually fixed; however, the repairman alerted her to something way more unsettling. Someone had been squatting in her basement. We, of course, were privy to the fact that Red Coat would make her way under the DiLaurentis house regularly. We just weren’t quite sure of why. I’m still thinking that someone crazy and creepy, and most likely someone who wanted to be Ali, has been playing house. Did Mrs. DiLaurentis’ story (about getting a call to Radley due to seemingly insane behavior from Alison, only to arrive and find Cece Drake dressed up in Ali’s close, causing a ruckus) sell me entirely on Cece being Red Coat? Nah, it just seems too obvious. Of course, absolute insanity would be something new to consider, rather than someone super intelligent actively hunting the girls. If Cece is truly off her rocker, it would still be very entertaining to witness this reveal. Mrs. DiLaurentis filled Emily in on the fact that Ali’s relationship with Cece grew increasingly toxic, getting to the point where the girls traded switching clothes for swapping personalities. Sheesh! Spencer managed to chime in later, reminding the others that Ali had masks made for those who wished to look like her. Could Melissa Hastings still be a culprit? Is Red Coat necessarily blonde? I mean, that does look like a wig. Is it even a woman?

The most important things to note while closing out this Recap and Review of Pretty Little Liars, Season 4 Episode 10, is that Wren made yet another phone call, and this time, it seemed way more incriminating. Mocking the situation with Veronica and coloring in the picture he'd previously used to test Mona, we were filled in on one more clue. Wren knows of Red Coat. At least, that's what his coloring job told us… In other news, Emily did some snooping and uncovered the drilled holes between the upstairs floorboards and Red Coat's cave underneath the porch. Meaning, she realized that this is no ordinary bum.

What did you think of Pretty Little Liars Season 4 Episode 10, "The Mirror Has Three Faces"? Is Cece Red Coat? Is Ali's mother to be trusted, or does she know Dr. Palmer more than she's let on? Is Cece really the girl Ali's mom referred to in that flashback? Do you want Aria to end up with Ezra or Jake? What the hell is going on with Wren?
