Pretty Little Liars - Season 3 Episode 7 - Recap and Review - Crazy
Pretty Little Liars' spooky seventh episode this season mixed real world murder mystery with supernatural scares. "Crazy" was jam packed with everything from Ouija boards to insane asylums.

The episode opened with Hanna (Ashley Benson) warding off Rosewood's equivalent of Slimer from Ghostbusters, Wilden (Bryce Johnson). Wilden wants her blood to test against the sample the police recovered on Ali's ankle bracelet. Apparently, she has the matching blood type. Hanna seemed especially ticked off and paranoid. What if someone planted her blood?
The girls seem to think Hanna would have realized A taking a blood sample, but Hanna isn't as sure. Spencer (Troian Bellisario) is more concerned with her relationship with half brother Jason (Drew Van Acker) after the duo mistakenly delivered the bracelet that freed Garrett to the police.
Along with Aria (Lucy Hale) and Emily (Shay Mitchell), Spencer ran into an old friend of Alison's at the town cafe. Cece Drake (Vanessa Ray) is a dead ringer for Alison (pun intended). She talks like her, stands like her, and intimidates like her. She also knows all there is to know about the girls and she's back in Rosewood! "Swing by my boutique anytime you feel like stealing," she says. She's too friendly for someone who knows all of their secrets. Then again, she's basically Alison. She claims that when she spent the summer with Ali in Cape May, Ali was a fragile wreck.
Ella (Holly Marie Combs) has a date! Her MainlineMate profile caught the attention of a "silver fox." Aria warns her to stay away from scarves. Slut it up accordingly, Ella! Only problem is that the date ended up being with Pastor Ted a.k.a. Ashley Marin's crush. No matter, Ella wasn't into him. He was too much like her ex-husband a.k.a. arguably the worst dad ever. Only arguably so because we know how awful all Rosewood dad's are.
Speaking of which, we have a new Rosewood dad to hate this week. Ali's father rolled back into town, and Hanna was looking to make nice after years of tension with Ali's parents. We don't know why her father hates Hanna yet, though. That part comes later.
Spencer added Cece and her summer in Cape May with Ali to her massive digital records of everything Ali and A. Toby (Keegan Allen) confronted her on the lie she told last week, the one where she asked him to accompany Hanna to her dance while she snuck around with Jason. Spencer copped pretty quickly, hostly. She explained the situation with the bracelet, and Toby seemed forgiving. What if Garrett is innocent? Spencer accused Toby of killing Alison for a good long while, and now they kiss on the lips!

Nate (Sterling Sulieman) visited Emily at work. Emily is off of cappuccino probation. It's not that hard to steam milk, Emily. He wanted her advice on dating Jenna. Specifically, he asked her to accompany him to Cece's boutique to pick out something more appropriate than a rank candle. Also, Nate claims Jenna refers to Emily and Maya as good friends. Maya even offered to drive her home from school a few times. Is it me, or does Maya seem like she had more secrets than anyone?
Later on, Emily accompanied Nate to the boutique. Cece annoyed the hell out of her, and there was a lot of talk surrounding Emily being a lesbian. She knows, everyone! Nate says he's only dating Jenna because the "hottest girl in town" isn't straight. Cece says if she's not into Nate, she's either blind or...
Emily looked more fed up than anything. She even tried talking to Nate about how Jenna once dated Garrett, hoping to scare him off. "She could have been a victim, too!" declared Nate. Emily couldn't catch a break this week. In an "attempt to help," Cece slyly swiped Jenna's phone number from Emily's phone. She called up Jenna on the spot and sassed her for "stealing her boyfriend" and threatened to "scratch Jenna's eyes out." A joke in poor taste, obviously. Regina George is so much better at that game, Cece. Emily was mortified. Honestly, the worst part about all of this for me was that Cece knew Emily's coffee order by heart and started referring to her as "Americano." I'm embarrassed just writing that.
At the Marin residence, Aria and Hanna found a decrepit looking Ouija board that looked eerily familiar to Hanna. Hanna reached down to pick up the decoder only to find herself pricked and bleeding. "See how easy it is for me to get your blood?" The note panicked Hanna even further. Hanna filled Aria in on the significance of the clue. The decoder was the token Hanna chose to bury with Alison, just like the earrings Aria left in her casket.
Flashback time! Just before recovering Ali's (Sasha Pieterse) body, Hanna and Mona played the Ouija board to playfully find answers about Alison's disappearance. The board revealed that Ali was still alive, and with a crackle of lightning, Hanna caught a glimpse of her outside the window. There have been way too many glimpses of a living Alison at this point. Is Alison alive? Probably.
Spencer met up with Jason while he was out for a run. He wasn't at all upset with her, he's just done meddling altogether. He's tired of being the town punching bag. He should probably hang out with Toby. They both have the "brooding loner/ cops hate me" act down. Spencer asked about Cece, and according to Jason, she's really no good. Surprise!
Spencer's mom was busy trying to delay the blood tests for Hanna. According to Spencer, a maybe from her mom is as good as a win. I believe that! Meanwhile, Aria offered to visit Mona (Janel Parrish) to help Hanna. Hanna's not really welcome at the mental hospital any longer. Aria's trip to visit Mona was scary! It took the regular, Wren inhabited, Rosewood mental hospital straight into haunted insane asylum territory. The nurse made Aria leave her earrings at the front desk, and Aria looked discouraged. Making Aria leave her kooky earrings is like making her leave her soul. The patients looked loonier, and Mona had her "crazy creep" persona out in full force. Also, she built a house of cards the Brady Bunch would have envied like no other.
Mona gave Aria twenty-five seconds to make her point. Aria had her "bad cop" act on while she quietly interrogated Mona. Her friendship with Hanna was real, so help her already! Mona seemed genuinely concerned with the fact that someone was delivering keepsakes from Ali's grave. "Tell Hanna I'm sorry!" Shut up, old A. You're so season 2.
Hanna showed up to meet Aria at the gate. Visiting hours were over, but Hanna planned on sneaking in.
Aria: "Friends don't let friends sneak into insane asylums alone."
Not for nothing, but these girls are pretty fearless. I know it's a T.V. show but if I were a teenage girl, I'd be desperate to befriend them, too, I think. Also, I admire the "no splitting up" philosophy in horror scenarios.
Apparently, Mona knows why Ali's dad hates Hanna's guts. Aria nags Hanna to tell the story, so she does. It's pretty damn simple. Hanna reported seeing Ali the night she did Ouija with Mona because... she saw Ali the night she did Ouija with Mona. Doesn't this make sense? She told Ali's mom, and three days later Ali turned up dead as a doornail. Honestly, if her parents really believe that Ali's best friend would think that was funny, they're idiots. Hanna should feel absolutely no guilt over this.
Mona escaped! Did she steal Aria's car keys? We see her speed away in what looks like a student driver type car. She speeds by none other than Spencer; however, we find out that we, the viewers, have been duped by editing. It's actually just Jason driving drunk. He crashes into a parked car, and Spencer hurries to get him home before the police arrive at the scene. Back at the Hastings', Toby confronts Spencer once again. When the police, Wilden included, show up to question Spencer before she can retrieve her car, Toby lies to cover for her. Spencer plays along until the cops leave, but Toby is upset with her, at this point. Lying like that is a felony! This is Rosewood. Anything goes, Toby!
As it turns out, Mona just used the tweezers she stole from Hanna a few episodes back to break into the locked off Children's Ward. Aria and Hanna followed Mona's eerie cooing deep into the abyss of china dolls and rocking horses. When they finally came across Mona brushing a doll's hair, she started speaking in code. "Miss Aria, you're a killer not Ezra's wife." "No one to save Ali from evil." It seems like nothing, but it turns into something by the episode's end.
After escaping the House on Haunted Hill, Aria and Hanna reminisced in bed. Ella called Aria. There was a silver lining to her date with Ted. She sort of fell for the owner of the coffee shop and ended up having a second first date. "She's a slut," Aria informed Hanna. Job well done, Ella! No more scarves, Ella! Before she could fall asleep, Hanna cracked the code Mona was spewing.
We saw a flashback of Hanna and Mona out and about prior to learning Hanna's secret. It seemed like nothing, just Ali's dad screaming at Hanna in public, but we were let in on a secret code Mona developed to talk about people in front of their faces. For example, you could say "She lives under trees" to call a girl a "s-l-u-t" without her even knowing. Hanna blew it off in the flashback, but as it turns out, crazy Mona was singing her codes like "Maya knew" and "Not safe." With Spencer's brain, they managed to decode everything, leading them to a website called MassSugar.com, which actually ended up being a picture of Maya with a space for a password.
The episode closed with A pulling a recorder out of one of the doll's in the Children's Ward.
What did you all think of the episode? Will Cece be annoying or useful? Is Alison even really dead? Is Mona on the A-Team or Team Hanna? Will Toby's lie come back to haunt them? Who's blood is on the bracelet? Is Cece like Ali, or was Ali like Cece?
