'Pirates of the Caribbean 5' to Release on July 7, 2017

It's official: Jack is coming back!

Walt Disney Studios has announced that Captain Jack Sparrow will return when Pirates of the Caribbean 5 hits theaters on July 7, 2017. The pirate-themed franchise has been a massive moneymaker for Disney, although it will face stiff competition from the June 30th release of Despicable Me 3, and the July 14th release of Fantastic Four 2. That is, assuming that the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot doesn't bomb and lead to the cancellation of the franchise.

Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, directors of the Oscar nominated foreign-language drama Kon Tiki, will direct. The film had initially been planned for a 2015 release, but script issues caused the movie to be pushed back. With this announcement, it seems the movie is back on the right track, thankfully (I say "thankfully" because I'm a huge fan of this franchise. I love me some big-screen adventure serials, even when they're bloated).
