Pia Toscano is now a backup singer for Jennifer Lopez on tour

American Idol superstar Pia Toscano has found herself a new job. She's now officially a backup singer for Jennifer Lopez on tour.

Pia is the second Idol alum who has landed a high profile job as a backup singer in the industry. American Idol Season 8 fourth placer Allison Iraheta was one of the backup singers for American Idol last season.

Pia, who placed ninth on American Idol Season 10 in 2011, sang the National Anthem at the Stanley Cup finals this year and was considered a "good luck charm" according to THR.

Pia told THR that Jennifer Lopez has taken her "under her wing."

Of course this is all ironic since American Idol has been known in the past for taking contestants who have been "in the wings" for so long and catapulting them to solo stardom. Melinda Doolittle from American Idol Season 6 famously left her backup singer gig to become a solo artist on Idol. Now it seems the roles are reversed: Singers are now using Idol to find gigs in the entertainment industry, including but not limited to, backup singing.

Unfortunately, Idol can no longer use the "backup singer" storyline to great effect like they did for Melinda. It would be silly for them to take a backup singer and present them with their current job as a career option after Idol.

I keep having this image in my head of Ryan Seacrest telling a contestant: "You too can be a backup singer like Allison Iraheta (points to the back of the stage)" or "You too can be a backup singer for Jennifer Lopez! Can (name of contestant) be your backup singer JLo?"
