There is a petition for Alaska to secede back to Russia

Some people in Alaska want to secede and go back to Russia.

Taking their queue from the Crimeans in Ukraine, Alaskans have started a petition at WhiteHouse.gov

Since Vladimir Putin has declared that he will protect Russians all over the world, I think for Russian Alaskans who long for the days of old Russian America this is worth a shot.

The petition reads:

WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:

Alaska back to Russia.

Groups Siberian russians crossed the Isthmus (now the Bering Strait) 16-10 thousand years ago.

Russian began to settle on the Arctic coast, Aleuts inhabited the Aleutian Archipelago.

Vote for secession of Alaska from the United States and joining Russia

For those unfamiliar with history, the United States purchased Alaska from Russia for $7,200,000 on August 1, 1867.

Recently, Russia occupied Crimea in the Ukraine after civil unrest in the capital of Kiev ousted their pro-Russian president. Crimeans then held a vote to secede to Russia. It was overwhelmingly approved and Vladimir Putin made it official last week. Crimea is now Russian territory (disputed by the U.S. and the E.U. of course).

Can Alaska succeed in seceding back to its mother Russia?

The petition still has a long way to go to reach 100,000 but Alaskan Russian loyalists still have until April 20, 2014. (90,099 more Russian Alaskan sign-ups to go when I last checked).

Update: Russia is preparing to annex Moldova, says NATO commander
