Peter Sarsgaard is that rare talent that's both immensely respected and completely underappreciated. Hopefully, his stock will rise with the news that he's been tapped to play the villain in the third season of AMC's The Killing.
Sarsgaard will play Tom Seward, a death row inmate whose time is winding down. He's described as "a lifelong convict born into poverty and crime who has been in and out of the system for violent crimes since he was 10. Never wanting to appear weak, every interaction for Tom is a challenge and one he must dominate."
In his first recurring role in a TV series, Sarsgaard joins new cast members Elias Koteas, Amy Siemetz and Max Fowler. Koteas is the new partner for Mireille Enos' character, Sarah Linden (though ex-partner Joel Kinnaman will still reprise his role as Stephen Holder). Seimetz, meanwhile, plays the mother of a missing daughter, while Fowler portrays a street hustler.
The 12-episode third season of The Killing will be set a year after the conclusion to the Rosie Larsen case, and will see Linden drawn back into her role as a detective when Holder's search for a runaway girl leads him to a series of murders tied to one of her old cases.
Peter Sarsgaard has extensive experience in darker roles, from his work in Flightplan to his turn as the big bad in Green Lantern. However, his best roles include a wearied editor in Shattered Glass (for which he received a Golden Globe nomination) and as a lecherous man-about-town in An Education. His latest role, as an abusive porn producer in the Amanda Seyfried vehicle Lovelace, premiered Saturday at the Berlin International Film Festival.
