Snubs: Some HUGE shocks. Lee Daniels' The Butler was completely snubbed: no Oprah in Supporting Actress, no screenplay nod, nothing. Paul Greengrass failed to make the Best Director shortlist for Captain Phillips, and he's not even the most egregious omission from that film: Tom Hanks, who'd been as close to a sure thing as this awards season would allow, was completely snubbed for both Captain Phillips and Saving Mr. Banks.
Speaking of Saving Mr. Banks, no Emma Thompson either -- hell, the movie only scored one lone nomination (for its Original Score). It's strange to see how strong contenders fell by the wayside in the space of a few weeks. Even the pictures that were gaining momentum didn't land in the places they were expected to. For instance, despite a Best Picture nomination for Her, Joaquin Phoenix was snubbed for his performance, as was Spike Jonze in the Best Director category. But even those omissions weren't as surprising as the near total lack of love for Inside Llewyn Davis, as I suppose the Academy finally saw a Coen Brothers film they didn't love.
Regrets: I feel kind of stupid giving up on Jonah Hill at the last minute after insisting he would be nominated the entire season. I also feel pretty silly not going with Meryly Streep, but alas, I got an idea in my head and couldn't let it go. I also probably should have seen the Christian Bale love coming. I had originally put him in the Best Supporting Actor category until a reader helpfully pointed out that Bale had been submitted in the lead actor category, so I replaced him in my predictions with American Hustle cast mate Bradley Cooper. But while I got Cooper, it never occurred to me to predict Bale in lead. Ah well, shows what I know.
Other surprises: Stories We Tell was snubbed in the Documentary Feature category. Also, in a truly rare snub, Pixar was left out of the Best Animated Feature category, which is a surprise given how well Monsters University was received. Another minor shocker was the complete omission of Robert Redford from the Best Actor category for All Is Lost, although I kind of saw that as a bit of a longshot heading in, given that the film never gained traction.
Welcome surprises: While I'm sad Ed Sheeran didn't get into the Best Original Song category for "I See Fire" from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, I'm thrilled that Pharrell Williams is now an Academy Award nominee for "Happy" from Despicable Me 2. I also love that 20 Feet From Stardom, a documentary about backup singers (featuring The Voice finalist Judith Hill), scored in the documentary feature category. And "The Moon Song" getting nominated is a welcome surprise, as is all the love Her received. Lastly, Sally Hawkins landing in Best Supporting Actress finally makes up for her inexplicable snub for Happy-Go-Lucky in 2008, so this is great news all-around.
Statistics: For the second year in a row, a David O. Russell film has scored nominations in each of the four acting categories. It becomes only the fifteenth film to ever accomplish this feat, and David O. Russell becomes the only director to accomplish this feat twice. Meanwhile, Steve McQueen becomes only the third black director to be nominated for Best Director, after John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood) and Lee Daniels (Precious). Also, Barkhad Abdi and Lupita Nyong'o are the 17th and 18th actors, respectively, to be recognized by Oscar for their film debuts.
Overall, I really like this collection of nominations. Final tally: American Hustle and Gravity lead with 10 nominations, while 12 Years A Slave is close behind with 9. Should be a really tight Oscar race!
So what do you think of these nominations? Did the right films make the cut? Sound off in the comments!
