The Originals - Recap: An Evil Witch and a Poisoned Apple… Classic!

The Originals debuted a new side of Elijah tonight in an episode that emphasized, quite brutally, the importance of honoring the bond of blood. Unfortunately for some, family doesn’t always bring power. Also, take a look at the poem shared by Klaus below!

Episode 6 of Season 1 of The Originals, “Fruit of the Poisoned Tree,” opened with a reading from Klaus (Joseph Morgan), who shared William Blake’s “A Poison Tree” through a narration while the likes of Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin), Marcel (Charles Michael Davis), and Elijah (Daniel Gillies) went about their morning routines. Rebekah (Claire Holt) spent her early hours, meanwhile, scrubbing blood out of an antique carpet. Much of the episode centered on the concept of familial ties and the power the bond of blood holds over each of us, even someone as stubborn and selfish as Klaus. In the end, it was Elijah who’d introduce us to a new side of his personality, and all in the name of the Original family. Here is the Recap and Review of Episode 6 of Season 1 of The Originals, “Fruit of the Poisoned Tree”!

“A Poison Tree” - a poem by William Blake, read by Klaus Mikaelson

I was angry with my friend:

I told my wrath, my wrath did end.

I was angry with my foe:

I told it not, my wrath did grow.

And I watered it in fears,

Night and morning with my tears;

And I sunned it with smiles,

And with soft deceitful wiles.

And it grew both day and night,

Till it bore an apple bright;

And my foe beheld it shine,

And he knew that it was mine,

And into my garden stole

When the night had veiled the pole;

In the morning glad I see

My foe outstretched beneath the tree.

The symbolic tale of Klaus' entire existence; a tree grown in the name of vengeance!. Needless to say, the theme of "poisoned" fruit would continue on throughout this week's episode, and, funny enough, an actual apple could prove to be the key to Klaus' undoing. More to come later!

Rebekah was peeved to find that her brothers had begun bonding with vampire reading time and a dose of human blood straight from the vein. While Elijah refused Klaus’ peace offering of a warm body, it’d be Rebekah who’d take to cleaning up the mess of said corpse. Hayley, meanwhile, continued to get used to the concept of living in a home run by vampires. Now that Elijah has returned, the chemistry between the two is beginning to sizzle. I’m guessing all of that time spent apart while Elijah slumbered with a dagger in his chest got things percolating on Hayley’s end.

In the meantime, Marcel spent most of his time during Episode 6 searching for answers and an honest friend. Remember, he’s become more and more aware of Klaus’ scheming and the ulterior motives surrounding their friendship. As it turned out, the one vampire Marcel had ever truly trusted, his dearest friend, Thierry (Callard Harris), had spent the past few weeks rotting in the underground vampire dungeon known as “The Garden.” I’m sure you recall the crime that landed Thierry a spot in this prison, which is essentially a tomb in which vampires are bricked into place and forced to starve sometimes for centuries. Thierry had been manipulated by Klaus into killing another vampire, essentially breaking Marcel’s number one rule; however, if he’d divulge any more information to Marcel, his century-long sentence would be reduced so significantly that Thierry could party it up alongside his buddy at the next Mardi Gras. Simply put, Thierry retold the truth to Marcel, who hadn’t been thinking clearly the night the events transpired. Certainly, evidence was planted, the vampire Thierry killed was compelled, and there must be a mole in their midst. Josh (Steven Krueger), the vampire Klaus has had compelled since the beginning of the season, has been working undercover this entire time unbeknownst to Marcel. More importantly, Marcel was on a quest to discover the location of Klaus’ true New Orleans home, the plantation house that kept Hayley safe.

Sophie (Daniella Pineda) and Sabine (Shannon Kane) were sideswiped by a group of cloaked witches at the start of Episode 6. Sophie was apprehended while Sabine was left passed out on the ground, covered in the vegetables the self-proclaimed “Martha Stewart,” Sophie, had intended to sauté. Agnes, the elder witch we’d come to label by this point as the most awful of the awful, would quickly inject Sophie with some sort of dark enchanted syringe, a tool used to induce miscarriages. Seriously, how convenient for them that one of the very few cloaked magical objects these witches have left is used for abortions! Hayley, who’d continued to bond with Rebekah this week, quickly began to “microwave,” as the spell injected into Sophie, the witch linked to Hayley and her child, began to take effect. The crew would have until that evening to stop the procedure.

Sabine, realizing Klaus and Elijah wouldn’t release her from their clutches unless she’d spill the beans, gave the details on Sophie’s whereabouts, yet Sophie had no information on where Agnes could be hiding. Of course, she’d be lying low until her scheme could be carried out in good time. Sophie, who still seems hesitant to believe Sabine’s vision of a demonic hell-spawn growing inside of Hayley with the intention of destroying her entire coven, decided to offer her earnest help in rescuing the she-wolf’s unborn baby.

Father Kieran (Todd Stashwick) and Cami (Leah Pipes) would share a scene inside the church confessional this week. Remember, Cami is Kieran’s niece, and her deceased twin brother, Sean, was his nephew. Cami has been compelled by Klaus to be at peace with her twin’s suicide and the church massacre he’d committed out of the blue while the Original vampire worked to find the culprit behind the hexing. Cami, though, found a new form of stress in the fact that her pain had mysteriously vanished. Even the sight of, say, the word “murderer” graffitied across the boy’s gravestone did little to stir any emotional sense of grief from her. Cami found this seriously unsettling, and an eaves dropping Klaus would subsequently become distraught. Kieran, meanwhile, did his best to mask his own feelings of anger and a sense of a failed responsibility to his nephew.

As it turned out, Klaus would have the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. Agnes, the witch responsible for attempting to murder his unborn child, was also the witch responsible for hexing Sean. Thus, Klaus and Kieran would have a common enemy and enlisting the human council’s help in finding Agnes would prove to be easier than we were originally led to believe it would be. Kieran had just as much of an intention of making this woman pay as Klaus did, but another problem would arise. Once Agnes was, indeed, brought into the church by the crooked police of the French Quarter, she’d reveal that the dark object, this magical syringe, had no reversal or cure. Thus, the only way to save Hayley’s baby would be to unlink her from Sophie.

Luckily, Elijah had previously gotten to work on the matter. Davina (Danielle Campbell) was handed a page from Elijah’s mother’s grimoire, a very difficult spell that would require a tremendous amount of focus and power. If Davina could magically untangle a certain knotted rope, she’d train to control her abilities while simultaneously breaking the link between Hayley and Sophie. While the young witch struggled to do so, Hayley continued to burn up at home, driving Rebekah, Elijah, and Sophie to drag her into the swimming pool in an effort to cool her down. Rebekah had stolen some herbs from the magic shop prior, ingredients Sophie had drummed up as a means of further slowing down the process of the twisted spell. Luckily, just before the process could be completed, Davina would pull through. The bond was broken, and we were subsequently treated to one chemistry-filled quiet moment between Elijah and a relieved Hayley in the pool. Rebekah watched on with us as this new budding romance continued to bloom.

Sophie, desperate for Elijah to get to Klaus before he could murder Agnes in revenge, pleaded with the most honest of the Originals to save their last living elder. Elijah, now realizing that Agnes’ power was the last true link to these witches’ ancestral energy, promised Sophie that he’d stop Klaus from killing the woman. He didn’t make any promises, though, for his own behavior. Enraged by Agnes’ attempt to murder his unborn niece, Elijah did coerce Klaus to unhand the witch from inside the church, yet Elijah would snap her neck with ease moments later. Elijah is a tolerant gentleman who keeps his word, but nobody messes with his bloodline.

Rebekah’s duties in New Orleans had come to an end. Longing for the freedom from the warring stirred up by her brothers, the time had come for the Original sister to move on. After saying goodbye to Elijah and Hayley, Rebekah would pay one last visit to Marcel to bid farewell. Resistance seemed to be futile, and the two would finally deliver the sex scene that had been teased since Rebekah first arrived in New Orleans. The moment was steamy enough, but what came afterwards was more important to the narrative. Rebekah, who’d all season long been the one seemingly under Marcel’s spell while he quite effortlessly continued tugging at her heartstrings, reminded Marcel that empires come and go, and even New Orleans will in the end be of no value if he had no one to truly share it with. Marcel’s vampire brethren are his makeshift family, but they’re also his minions. This hit Marcel where it hurts, but Rebekah would also unknowingly tip him off to that which he’d been searching for. In handing him an apple from the plantation, Marcel realized that the Mikaelsons had set up shop on the same land where they’d once discovered him as a young slave with the will to survive.

Klaus would pay Cami a final visit at the bar, absolutely proud to confess that he’d done away with Agnes, the witch who’d hexed her brother. Expecting Cami to find a sense of peace from this knowledge, Klaus was absolutely caught off-guard when his potential new flame hauled off and slapped him hard across the face. He’d, from her perspective, made her an accomplice to a revenge murder. Cami, devastated by this news, vowed to find a cure for the compulsion Klaus had forced upon her before promising to make him pay. Klaus would leave in a flash, devastated.

To end the recap, Episode 6 closed with Marcel paying the Mikaelson home a visit, learning of the existence of Hayley and uncovering the truth that Josh has, in actuality, been working for Klaus. Marcel would confront Klaus on the street later that night, cluing his former mentor in on the fact that he’d become privy to the location of his secret home with his signature grin. Klaus would return to the house moments later to find Hayley missing.
