The Originals - Recap: Whatever's in Hayley is Probably a Girl!

“Tangled Up in Blue” continued The Originals’ first season run tonight with the series' best episode yet. A party set the stage for an awesome takedown. One minute, it's "(probably) a girl!" the next, it's "what the hell's inside of me?"

Episode 3 of Season 1 of The Originals saw Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Rebekah (Claire Holt) teaming up with local witch Sophie (Danielle Pineda) in order to retrieve their missing brother, Elijah. Problem: The mega teen-witch who could give even Sabrina (the Teenage Witch) a run for her money doesn’t seem to want to be found along with him. Conducting magic is illegal in the French Quarter, so our Original family would have to get quite crafty in intricately setting a trap for Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) and his vampire cronies. Meanwhile, Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) would remain confined to Mikaelson Manor with nothing to do but to read through Elijah’s old tales of love and loss. Spoiler Alert: Watching a single episode of The Originals sort of spills all of the details one would ever need to know about the dynamics of this family. Elijah had nice penmanship, though! Here is the Recap and Review of Season 1 Episode 3 of The Originals, “Tangled Up in Blue”!

The game plan during Episode 3 was more complex than ever. Having joined forces, begrudgingly, with sister Rebekah, Klaus got straight to work on Plan A; politely requesting that Elijah’s slumbering corpse be returned to their family. Of course, Plan A never actually ends up transpiring on a show such as this, thus, we had a Plan B: Crush everyone! Booze and war! I appreciated how The Originals played straight into Elijah’s vampire diaries (I had to.) by having his tales of how awful his siblings could inherently be narrate a playful discussion between Klaus and Rebekah regarding the joy of burning bodies. It was as though these terrors were suddenly highlighted as we witnessed things from Hayley’s perspective.

Klaus hadn’t been getting along with Thierry (Callard Harris), Marcel’s right-hand vampire and the poor victim of our lead’s werewolf bite during the season premiere. Needless to say, Thierry had grown even more skeptical of Klaus as more and more vampire carcasses piled up. Had the warning of the werewolf in the Quarter been nothing but a trap to weaken Marcel’s army? Actually, Thierry, that was indeed incorrect. If we recall correctly, a local witch had tipped off Marcel’s team to Hayley’s status as a werewolf. Rebekah and Sophie would pay the girl a visit at her shop, and Rebekah’s personal brand of ladylike manhandling did the trick, as it usually does. This Katie witch (Alexandra Metz) squealed quite quickly, revealing her romantic ties to Thierry and prompting Rebekah and Klaus to, in turn, go from viewing him as the ultimate thorn in their sides to the potential key to unraveling Marcel’s entire operation. They’d discovered something of importance! That is, until Marcel would reveal that he’d been aware all along of the budding romance between the supposedly forbidden lovebirds. Thierry plays the trumpet, by the way. He’s been proudly dubbed “the Music Man” by Marcel. “How original,” I’m assuming Klaus, the Original, thought to himself. Still, The Originals is doing a great job of clueing us in to the fact that Marcel is loyal to his people as long as they’re openly loyal to him. That is, until he isn't.

Sophie wouldn’t like what Klaus would come to suggest in private. If Sophie could perform a locator spell, they’d easily be able to track Elijah; however, magic can be detected by Davina (Danielle Campbell), a name that certainly struck Deveraux’s attention. They’d need to rouse up some sort of a distraction, a more powerful spell that could capture Davina’s attention while Sophie quietly conducted the locator spell. Remember, the witches are in an alliance with these Originals, but they’re all on shaky ground. Klaus would intend to play Katie and Thierry in an attempt to confuse Marcel. Sophie, recognizing that Katie isn’t entirely innocent and is more likely to favor Thierry than her own coven, inevitably agreed to lead the girl straight into a trap that would most likely lead to her death. Remember when Katie tried to have a pregnant woman ripped to shreds last week for brownie points? We don’t feel bad.

A charity event thrown by Marcel would set the stage perfectly. First, Rebekah would ensure that Marcel’s attention would be kept occupied throughout the night by inviting everyone’s favorite bartender, Camille Cami (Leah Pipes). Everybody loves Cami. (What, was "Camille" too frumpy?) It probably has something to do with the fact that Cami runs the bar and these people are constantly drinking scotch. Still, there was something great about seeing the captivating character, a human one at that, arrive at the party in a striking white dress in contrast to most of the room’s black ensembles. She’s pure of heart, everybody! She was dressed like a fallen angel! Do you see the symbolism? Jealous Rebekah is so much fun to watch, especially once Marcel caught an unexpected glimpse of his crush, Cami. It seems all was quite quiet, until Klaus’ plans across town were set into motion. Thierry and his gang were ordered to rough up some witches, as Klaus had done an adequate job of planting seeds of an uprising in Marcel’s mind. Thierry went light on Katie, of course, mostly using the necessary raid as an attempt to sneak some alone time in the witch’s shop. How would Klaus make sure of an epic disasterpiece? He’d spent the afternoon, with some help from his newest servant, the vampire he’d compelled during Episode 2, draining another one of Marcel’s buddies of all of his blood… and subsequently, his vervain. Klaus would then compel the vampire to attack Katie during the raid, prompting an enraged Thierry to drive a stake straight through his heart. See, Klaus really had to get lucky with all of these particular little details falling into place. Had Thierry not killed the man who’d attacked his lover, Katie would have no reason to turn to Sophie for help in conducting a powerful spell to protect him later.

The party was quickly turned upside down, as Marcel was alerted with a few whispers to Thierry’s indiscretion. Cami watched in disgust as Marcel pinned his right-hand man to the wall, muscling out the truth of the situation. Killing a vampire is the number one no-no, guys. Even Thierry, Marcel’s closest friend, would need to pay the price. Luckily, Katie was on hand just outside to ruffle the head vampire’s feathers. With Sophie’s private help, she mustered up some nasty telekinetic abilities, crippling Marcel and his friends in the street while simultaneously blowing fuses in several street lamps. I’m assuming the sparks were there to show us just how powerful she’d made herself in her suicide mission.

Rebekah waited alongside Sophie in the graveyard as the witch performed the locator spell; however, something would seem to go wrong yet again. Klaus, from the shadows of an alleyway, stepped in just in time to “save” Marcel’s life, killing Katie in an instant. Suddenly, the cloak protecting Sophie was gone, and Rebekah would nix the spell in order to protect Hayley. Remember, Hayley and Sophie are linked until the baby is born. In other news, Davina seems to be linked to Marcel for some reason. It’s not quite clear whether they’re also spiritually linked in life and death, or whether she’s simply in love with him.

Speaking of Hayley, it seems wolves have begun to be attracted to Mikaelson Manor due to her special bun in the oven. I mean, actual wolves, as in full-grown puppies not werewolves. Sabine the witch (Shannon Kane) stopped by their home to check in on Hayley, promising to keep her company while the others were out to play. For fun, Sabine would share a little trick her grandmother had taught her, a means of figuring out an unborn child’s sex. Unfortunately, we’d also come to learn of something else from the old parlor trick...

Thierry, meanwhile, was hauled off to something known at “the Garden” for a hundred years (yikes!). Marcel, who’d found more planted knowledge that his friend has betrayed him, said his goodbye before Thierry was “planted” himself. Meaning, he was sealed up to his neck in this living tomb to rot for a few decades. See you soon, Music Man! By “soon” I mean “never.” Who’s even going to remember the date?

Klaus and Cami seemed to have developed a strange new chemistry as well. Post-party at the bar, Cami was certainly a sight. There’s nothing quite like witnessing an angel (She remained in costume.) downing a draft of ale in a New Orleans street bar. Klaus would offer her some comfort, recognizing her broken heart and her draw to those she shouldn’t trust. Still, while Klaus’ affection and growing feelings for Cami might be honest, it was more important to him to compel her to keep seeing Marcel. Vampire Diaries fans, how quickly we’ve forgotten about Caroline here! What’s Mystic Falls?

Klaus’ move to “save” Marcel’s life might not have been on Rebekah’s radar, but Marcel certainly appreciated the gesture. Klaus had solidified his trust and thus, earned back Elijah’s body. Was this what Klaus’ had truly hoped for, or was Elijah merely a nice goody bag gift with which to leave the party? We don’t know. Rebekah certainly wasn’t in any mood to celebrate when Klaus revealed what he’d accomplish back at home. Yet again, Klaus’ selfish motives to destroy Marcel’s empire and seize Davina for himself (That’s a new one!) seem to have put their entire purpose in New Orleans, not to mention Sophie's life, in jeopardy. Hayley, meanwhile, shared a moment of kindness with Klaus… It’s (probably) a girl! Klaus smirked privately while Hayley continued to frantically Google. More on that in a moment, but Klaus needs a little girl. He would have a girl. Hayley, meanwhile, was busy searching for the translation to something Sabine had unexpectedly begun chanting from within a trance. “Nos omnia perdetu el eam.” No results would be found, but I’m guessing by the looks of those terms it’s something along the lines of “Baby will kill Earth.” Congratulation, Hayley!

P.S.- Davina would inevitably press pause on the peace offering Marcel had offered Klaus'. She's afraid of these Originals, and she's looking to kill.

What did you think of Season 1 Episode 3 of The Originals, “Tangled Up in Blue”? Is Klaus too self-serving to be our hero, or are we satisfied with an awesome antihero? Will Klaus, Cami, and Marcel develop a love triangle, or will Rebekah somehow charm Marcel back into her arms? Is is curtains for Thierry? What’s in Hayley’s womb?
