One Direction Accused of Ripping Off 'You & I' Video
Avril Lavigne isn't the only musical artist catching hell over their latest music video. One Direction is now taking the brunt of criticism from the production company behind Australian group Clubfeet, who accuse the mega-popular boy band of ripping off the concept for their "You & I" music video from Clubfeet's award-winning "Everything You Wanted" video.
The cloning effects in “You & I” are the main bone of contention here, as Australian production company OhYeahWow, which has developed music videos for such artists as Ben Folds and Gotye, alleges that the video is a wholesale rip-off of their concept. (Although, if it's any consolation to OhYeahWow, the songs are absolutely nothing alike. Both are catchy as hell though)
Despite the video being released last week, OhYeahWow is only now hearing about the alleged copycatting.
“Late Friday night whilst we were busy observing the good traditions of the public holiday, something very suspicious was brought to our attention,” OhYeahWow said in a statement. “It seems that the chaps of One Direction have taken it upon themselves to regurgitate our original concept, as seen in our award-winning clip for Clubfeet’s ‘Everything You Wanted.’ Don’t get us wrong, we here at Oh Yeah Wow are big One Direction fans and are envious of their ability to maintain flawless hairdos. To be crystal clear, OYW has nothing against creative evolution. Artists constantly reinterpret other works that have inspired them and we’re fine with people taking a technique and using it to create something new…The wider problem is, that plagiarism and copycatting is becoming increasingly common and acceptable.”
Neither One Direction nor "You & I" director Ben Winston have commented on the situation, but it looks like OhYeahWow might have a case here. What do you think? Compare the videos side-by-side below:
