And Now a 'Ninja Turtles' Sequel is in the Works
After its stellar $65 million opening weekend stunned most industry analysts, Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies has confirmed that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is getting a sequel.
Michael Bay will return to produce the film, with writers Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec penning the script and executive producing. However, it's unknown if Jonathan Liebesman would return to direct. The movie, scheduled to release on The statement did not specify whether or not Jonathan Liebesman would return to direct. If not, a new director will have to be found soon, since the movie is scheduled for release on June 3, 2016.
"To know moviegoers are embracing the Turtles with such enthusiasm is everything that we and all our filmmakers have been hoping for," said Paramount chairman and CEO Brad Grey in a statement. "We are thrilled with this weekend’s result, the enduring power of this franchise, and the opportunity to make another one."
"Launching a new take on the Turtles into the feature film world was a daunting task," added Paramount's Film Group president Adam Goodman, "because as fans of them ourselves, we felt a great responsibility to ensure audiences were going to experience everything they loved about the Turtles, while also getting to see them brought to life in a way they had never been seen before. The result exceeded our high expectations and the response to the film is beyond great, making it all the more fun to get started on the continuation of their story."
Say what you will about the merchandising reasons for creating the movie franchise in the first, but I took my nephew to see the movie this weekend, and I honestly really enjoyed it. Maybe it's because I got a contact high from my 6-year-old nephew, who was having a blast the entire film, but this was 90 minutes of action and fun that I don't feel the least bit guilty about digging. I couldn't possibly care less about how the turtles looked, or what their origins were, or the fact that Megan Fox was April O'Neil. I came out of the theater feeling like I got my money's worth, relative to what I expected going in. I had a blast, and I'm actually looking forward to this sequel, believe it or not. What do you think?
