Nina Dobrev and Derek Hough Split

It's Splitsville for a Vampire Diaries actress and her Dancing With the Stars boyfriend.

Nina Dobrev and Derek Hough have split after six weeks together. The couple, last seen in public together at Universal Studios' Hollywood Halloween Horror Nights in L.A. on Oct. 5, reportedly decided their relationship had "played itself out." Yet even with the belief that the relationship had run its course, there were other mitigating factors in the breakup, particularly distance. Hough is frequently in Los Angeles filming Dancing With the Stars while Dobrev is in Atlanta shooting The Vampire Diaries, which made it difficult for the 28-year-old dancer and the 24-year-old actress to maintain their relationship.

"The distance was too much to handle," said another source, in an observation that's all too true of an astounding number of long-distance relationships.

The romance reportedly started in late September, as "[Nina] was hanging a lot with Derek's sister Julianne," which brought her into frequent contact with Derek. As the source goes on to explain, she ultimately "fell for him."

And the feeling was more than mutual. "Derek is smitten with Nina," said a source, at the time. "He said he hasn't felt this way for a girl in a long time...Everyone approves!"

Of course, love in Hollywood is pretty ephemeral unless you're Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, so this breakup shouldn't come as all that big a surprise, unfortunately.

With that said, at least they're being adults about it, as Dobrev's friendship with Julianne Hough apparently hasn't suffered for how things ended with Derek.

"Julianne understands -- there are no hard feelings," said an insider.
