Nigel Lythgoe is angry that 'The Voice' won an Emmy

Ex-American Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe is angry and shocked that The Voice won an Emmy for Outstanding Reality Competition Program.

FOX fired Lythgoe as producer of Idol after dismal ratings last season, but this has not stopped him from defending Idol last night on Twitter. American Idol lost to The Amazing Race for 8 years and to Top Chef for one year in the nine seasons that Idol was nominated for Outstanding Reality Competition Program on the Primetime Emmys.

I understand that nine years of losing is frustrating for Nigel -- but The Voice has nothing to do with it.

Sounds like sour grapes to me!

He should have complained during the nine years his show lost -- not on the season that American Idol was not nominated and rival program The Voice won. If the Emmys was so important to him, he should have made sure that Idol submitted its best episode of the season every year. Instead they submitted duds year after year that didn't work. He has no one to blame but himself.

Season 5 of The Voice premieres tonight on NBC with the return of the original coaches Christina Aguilera and CeeLo Green to the panel.
